Calling all Delta/UPS/FedEX/United Dispatchers

I am looking for some advice from some of the above named airline dispatchers in regards to when I should start applying for a desk job with them.

My background-
6 months regional 121 experience
1 year 121 supplemental ETOPS experience on heavy aircraft

I am looking for another year or two years down the road and would like to see myself at one of those four airlines. Do you think 2-3 years of international/ETOPS/Polar operations would be enough to get the attention of some hiring managers? My current airline is not my final destination and I would like to start applying at some of these airline within 12-15 months.

Any advice?

PS, I am considering working for either of these airline part time at my current location in order to be an internal hire in the next 6 months when my bachelors is done.

Thanks

If I remember correctly from when Delta hired last spring, Delta requires 3 years of 121 experience before they will look at you. We had a couple dispatchers from my previous airline apply at Delta with 2.5 years experience and they received the "thanks, but no thanks" letters.

I would start applying whenever you see an opening - if you don't ask, the answer is always no. Definitely stay at your current airline to keep getting experience though. I have heard FedEx is big on internal hiring so if you can get a part time gig with them it might help your chances there. I do work at one of the airlines you mentioned and I have seen people get hired here with less than three years experience but in general most people have more - I think it just depends on timing. If you have any specific questions feel free to PM me.

Agree with Manniax. Apply whenever you see a job with them. FedEx does mostly hire from within, and a lot of people with experience at smaller carriers work part time and move up to GOCC. You're over qualified for a UPS management position in dispatch but don't meet the latest hiring requirements for a line dispatcher. Delta also hires a lot from within, but the last few rounds they've had to go outside to fill candidates. I'm not sure what they are looking for really. Don't know much about Unitenental, I interviewed there once (pre-merger in IAH), but that was a legend... wait for it... dary fail for me.

Never hurts to apply. I personally got on dispatching with one of those airlines with the posted minimum required 121 experience that they wanted. Never thought I would get a call and look what happened. As long as you meet said min requirements apply! Best of Luck

You should have started applying a year ago. Ignore what their posted minimum requirements are and apply anyway. If they filter you out you will be immediately forgotten, and you should immediately re-apply. You aren't going to get hired by talking about it on an internet forum. I'm serious, be persistent and shoot for the moon. My current gig at Uncle Parcel was snagged with my 174th resume and 1 year of dispatching experience at 24yo. You never know what kind of simpleton is sifting through the resumes and thinks you're the next prodigy of dispatching!!!

I am in the same boat. I am currently doing 121 Supplemental and nothing but ETOPS/Heavy Jet experience and I am looking to move to one of the above mentioned carriers. I have not seen a Delta post since last winter, and I know they are very big on internal hires. FedEx I know loves hiring internally. Mach82 applied to them but did not have any experience, but if you PM him, I am sure he will give you the requirements. UA/COA I do not think is hiring until after the move to Chicago. From what I heard, they have 5 classes of dxers to catch up on right now (United that is) and until they are through, the hiring is on hold. I went through the process with AA before they went bankrupt and was in the final 25, but because of the Chapter 11, they put everything on a freeze.

When the move happens to the new office, you can count on a lot of hiring from both CO/UA due to some people not wanting to move north from TX, and others choosing to retire rather than commute to downtown rather than Elk Grove. Keep an eye out on both websites and apply accordingly when the openings appear.

Thanks alot for the advice every one. I have always been a strong believer in applying no matter what cause a no is just a no. I am happy at my current carrier for now but plan on applying in the next year to the above guys no matter what. Just wanted to make sure I would at least have a shot.

Better start looking for some part time gigs to be an internal hire :)

I went on continental.com the other day to scour for some possibly openings. Looks like all the hiring is through united.com now. Just an FYI. When is the move definitively happening?

Looking over the next 12-14 months. Were happy where we are now but bigger plans are definitly on the horizon.

It's been a while but I wanted to reply to your post. I am interested in Delta and have roughly 7 years part 121 including Heavy & ETOPS. Been out of dispatching for a while but am in a refresher course right now. So, sure would appreciate any inside info., Thanks a lot,

...and also interested in any of the other majors/cargo carriers and actually worked for Fedex as a driver for a short bit

I would guess there will be quite a bit of hiring at UA during the last half of the year due to transition to a new flight planning system but I don't know exactly when it will be happening. They might decide to wait until next year, who knows...

FWIW Delta has a section on their internal SOC website (accessible to all regional partner employees as well) where they did a short bio on all the new hires they picked up last year so if you know someone with access to that page you could get them to show you what an average resume would look like for Delta. IIRC most of the people hired had between 5 and 10 years and typically some SOC management time as well. The vast majority were externals from regional/LCC airlines.

Start applying now, you already have more experience than I did when I moved up to a major. Good luck.

Also one thing with Delta...they value internal recommendations like gold--especially from captains. I'm going to say this: NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK. Make friends, Make connections. You never know when you will need to use them.

I'd say that goes for anywhere, any airline :-)

Thanks for the help, Seems like dispatch jobs don't come up on their career sites...seems like an inside thing. Actually, took a hiatus from the airline biz so am doing a refresher course now to back in the shwing.
