C421 Down in the Gulf near Tampa Bay

Ruh roh. Down after reporting turbulence in an area of thunderstorms. Not a good combination.

Looks like it went down right in the heart of that red cell.... 21000....prime altitude for feeling the wrath of a Gulf T-storm....

FYI those radar overlays are *somewhat* accurate, but they may be from a different time than when the flight was actually there.

They haven't moved since it went down. I think they stay on there as long as that is the current track..

Do 421's have radar, or would nexrad and a strike finder be the only onboard options if any?

A Bendix monochrome (RDR 160?) would have been original equipment, though whether it was functional or not is another question.

Wow, I just landed, right seat passenger in a C421 today. This airplane had a chelton GPS glass panel, and had weather overlays (clouds, radar, METAR, etc)

I certainly would not be flying anywhere near that area with Nexrad only. Nexrad looks super cool, and is great for long range planning, but it is in no way, shape or form a substitute for onboard radar.
