As someone mentioned earlier, the Caravan and PC-12 are exempt from that rule.

The FARs were amended to allow single engine turbine pt135, not 121.

As mentioned before empty ferry flights in single pilot aircraft can be flown as pt 91 where you and the "Captian" switch seats allowing you to build time.

Single Engine Piston pt. 135 has been going on for quite sometime now (at least since I started flying in 99).

So it wouldn't make sense that they put single engine turbroprop in there to allow operators to do this.

Here are some answers to many questions about the First Officer program that you may have.

How many pilots are we hiring?
We are hiring 4 now and probably 1-2 every other month. This will depend on turnover rate for both Captains and First Officers.

Do I need to be a US Citizen?
No, but you must be able to work in the USA. We do not sponsor potential candidates.

What is the pay?
$8.00/hr.

How many hours a week will I work?
30 minimum, 40 maximum. Work hours will fall between 0500-2200.

How many hours of flight time will I get?
It will be up to you. Depending on your desire to gain hours, you should be able to gain the maximum of 120 hours/month as per the FAR’s.

What is the pro-rated training contract?
This is a $4,000.00 training contract with the airline. The contract is 6 months in length. Should you leave employment (voluntary or involuntary) prior to the end of the 6-month period, you will be required to pay the balance of the contract. The balance due on the contact will decrease by 1/6th every 30 days of employment following the date you pass your checkride with Pacific Wings.

How soon after I have the qualifications, as a Captain will I be able to upgrade?
We have a constant need for Captains. We hire or upgrade about 10-12 Captains per year. You would probably be able to upgrade within 3 months of reaching the minimum qualifications.

How expensive is it to live on Maui?
Typically you can assume about 20% higher than the national average. You can share an apartment, condo, or house for $400.00 to $600.00 per month. It cost about $1,000.00 to have a car shipped from the west coast to Maui.

Do I have to come to Maui for an interview?
Yes. For mainland travels, we can provide flights from Honolulu (HNL) to Maui and return if required. Many of the better airfares are to Honolulu. We understand it is expensive, however, we receive numerous resume from qualified candidates. The only way to know that you are the one for the job is to have an in-person interview along with a simulator ride.

How do I schedule an interview?
I am available Tuesday-Friday afternoons for interviews. Let me know by email that you would like an interview and when you planning on coming. I will let you know if we are hiring at that time. You are still invited to come to
Maui for an interview even if there are no immediate openings. We will give you an interview and if we choose to hire you, you will be placed in a hiring pool. When a First Officer position becomes available, we will contact you.

Where are we located?
We are located in an office trailer next to the Commuter Terminal at the Kahului Airport (OGG) on the island of Maui.

Where can I stay?
This is a tourist island. There are numerous places to stay in the resort areas of the island. The airport is not located in the resort areas. Here are just a few choices within 7 miles of the airport and around $100.00/night.

I doubt they are 121, and I could be wrong, but it is my understanding that 121 requires a 'transport category' aircraft. It is impossible for a single to meet this requirement.

It is possible to be a 135 scheduled operation. Cape Air was as of about 2 years ago, and might still be. They were talking of up upgrading to 121, but had to get some turbine equipment.
 
i recently sent a resume just for the heck of it. the email i recieved back described the job a little differently. the email said if hired, i would be hired as a "ramper" and would fly as
FO only on my days off from working the ramp. the amount of time i would build would depend on how much i wanted to fly on my days off. i was really interested in the job until i realized i'd have to spend $800 to fly out and interview for a line service job. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

There is no requirement for an autopilot in 121 ops. Ever noticed that very few B1900s have them?

Heck, both our autopilots were out, including the FMS so we hand flew from SAN to SLC to ORD VOR to VOR.

We have those cross-bar flight director needles and IT SUCKED.
 
trying to clear up some common misconceptions ive seen around here:

- they are 135

- it is listed in the OPSPECs that we can log time legally as an FO

- there really are pilots that have moved on and are flying for other larger airlines and no they didnt get laughed out of interviews for SIC C208 time.

- yes you work customer service, ramp, reservations and for me, starting Sunday, Maintenance. i actually think all this is a big plus because you become a little more well rounded in the aviation world. youll be able to understand when a gate agent is having a problem with Worldspan and maybe even be of some assistance some day.

- you begin flying the line after you pass a 135 checkride. this occurs after approx. 8 hours of training in the caravan.

- you dont pay a dime to fly (NOT pay for flying job). you do sign the contract but i dont think they enforce the payback part very often.

- you get 4 days a week working the above jobs, 1 day a week set aside to fly your own line, and 2 days off. you can fly on your days off or before or after you work. you can fly as much or as little as you want. on those days, you dont get paid to fly but you get free turbine and total time in a 135 environment.

- the FO job isnt ment for higher time pilots, in fact they probably wont hire you if you have over 1000 hours but for low time pilots its a good starting job. you put in your time, you pay your dues but in the end its worth it.

if the training is anything like mine was you'll study on your own with no formal groundschool. Isn't there some sort of requirement to do good at reservations for a while first?

they don't but they get a few months cheap labor from you.

you sure are quick! thanks for telling me i smoke crack - i appreciate that. its amazing how negative and derogatory the mindset can be on this board, really brings the place down. just because i am enjoying my time out here and actually optimistic about the future you assume someone is feeding me this stuff. i am pretty new out here but it isnt quite that bad. everything i put on that post was from my own personal experience out here, no one has told me to say or not to say anything. Maybe youll prove me wrong but for now i am sacrificing spending valuable time with the girl i intend to marry to live out here so if i thought it sucked i sure wouldnt be here.
