Burnt Out

Hey folks, quick medical question. I am a current furloughed 121 guy, since Oct 1, and find myself back in the game of trying to stretch the typically small flight instructing paychecks. I am ready to move on and have been considering a career change, to anything stable and decent paying. I have always had the desire to serve as a officer in the military and since I have the college degree, the OTS packet sounds like the next step. With a previous history of asthma/allergies past the age of 12, I know getting a flight slot is not likely, and that's fine, but will this be a hindrance to passing the general military entry physical? (I no longer have symptoms) I have been thinking about meteorology, but what military careers besides flying, do you all recommend? Thanks!

If your looking at the Air Force, try 13MX which is an airfield ops officer. You are an ATC+in charge of running the entire airfield. From what I hear, it is pretty fun. Aditionally, maybe try Space and Missilie Officer. It is all good stuff in the USAF. Lots of jobs you can do for a few years with a steady pay check and keep flying on the side. Just be ready to give it all at OTS and serve hard core during your tenure. I'm sure you are aware of this, but nothing about becoming an officer or being one is easy. However, from the people I talk to, they are the most rewarding and the best jobs on the planet.

P.S. Don't give up on the Pilot slot though!

I personally wouldn't recommend even putting space and missiles down on your dream sheet. The nuke community is under a lot of scrutiny right now.

What is your degree?

Do the guard man, I'm thinking about it, keep your job, stay near home, small community. Sounds good to me.

If i could have done it all over again, I would have gone guard/reserve. They actually gave me the opportunity to go Guard or Reserve up until the day of commissioning due to force shaping, and I thought "I didn't do 5 years of ROTC do be a part timer." But I found out there are plenty of reservists and guardsmen on full time orders, and they seem to have a much more varied and interesting career path. Unless activated, you don't have to be on full time order if you don't want to, and you are not stuck at one base for 4 years. If you get hired to do a tour somewhere, you could go for a month, or 6 months, or more, and they pay you travel and per diem in addition to your pay.

That is a list of career fields. Feel free to PM me if you have questions about other career fields. I'll give you the straight poop and not sugarcoat anything. You will find that lots of people will sugarcoat their jobs, but I don't want you to be burnt out in another job because nobody told you that it was actually like office space and groundhog day rolled into one.

The following is for general admitance to the armed forces, not for flight positions.

Asthma

Previously, any history of asthma was disqualifying, regardless of age. While medical waivers were sometimes possible, waiver approval usually required scheduling and passing a pulmonary function test. Under the new policy, Asthma is only disqualifying if it occurs after the applicant’s 13th birthday.

Medical record screening may still be required, depending on the applicant’s medical history. However, in many cases, a signed statement, attached to the medical pre-screening form, stating that the applicant did not have any type of asthma (including exercise induced, or allergic asthma) or treatment for asthma after their 13th birthday will be sufficient.
Applicants who’ve experienced asthma or reactive airway disease after age 13 will require all medical documentation. Waivers may still be considered, depending on the applicant’s medical history and – possibly results from a pulmonary function test.

Thanks a lot Mike, thats what I was looking for. I haven't considered the guard, but that sounds like something I should look into. I've just got the run of the mill aviation degree, nothing special. Thanks for the tips everyone.

The real question is what are you interested in and is the active duty hiring in that area?

OTS is the shock absorber for commissions, so if we're low on say, scientists from the academy or ROTC that year we're going assess more scientists through OTS.

While it's not the same situation for you, I've had a lot of troops get picked up through OTS for their commissions. Some years it was a feast, some years it was a famine.

PM me if you're interested.
