Bose hiss in ERJ

I have noticed a loud hiss in my bose headsets in the ERJ. It is caused I believe by the microphone picking up too much noise (the sound changes dramatically if I cup my hand over the mic). I've turned every knob and dial I can and nothing helps. It annoys me enough that I've been flipping off the hot mic quite often. And unfortunately I haven't flown yet with anyone who has them, so I haven't been able to get any first person advice.

Is there a way to reduce the hissing?

If not, does every headset do that in the ERJ?

Does it still do it with the active noise cancelling turned off?

The david clark 13.4's, three of which are provided by my company in every aircraft, seem to work great. I used a pair of my own david clark H20-10's for a few years and it worked well too. In the end I got tired of luggling my own pair around in my flight kit and just defaulted back to the onboard 13.4's.

Most guys that mess with the active noise cancelling headset or "earplug" style headsets seem to be more trouble than they're worth IMHO. Sure you look like a goofus and get headset hair with the DC's, but at least they work.

Yep. The noise canceling makes the wind noise go away and leaves being just an annoying hiss from the mic. If I turn it off and on I can still hear the hiss with the noise canceling off, it's just buried under some wind noise.

To give you an idea of how loud it is, if the other guy's voice is "100% loudness", the hiss is at least 25-30%.

if you have a mic muff, try stuffing a little bit of cotton in there, that helped a lot with getting rid of the background noise for me

I've noticed it, too.

Personally, I just flip the hot intercom switch on the yoke down so it deactivates the MIC when I'm not talking.

When I am, I turn down the INT knob a bit, but turn UP the HEADPHONE knob and the #1 and/or #2 Radio knobs.

That seems to cut down the hiss a bit when I use the hot MIC setting.

I've noticed that the amount of nosie that I hear differs with each airplane. In some, nosie is hardly noticeable and in others... Also, I might hear a little buzz depending on the intensity of the PFD?MFD/EICAS and if the windshield heat is turned on. Its barely noticeable.

What condition is your mic muff in?

I'm using a Telex 750, but I've also found it depends on the aircraft.

I've read a bunch about this.

Can you provide any insight on how the 750 is working for you? If I'm going to be hearing an annoying hiss with the hot mic on, it might as well be $900 cheaper.

Telex 750

Another question for you about the Telex 750 -- in the pictures I see of it, it looks like there is nothing cupping around your ear. It's just there.

Do you use any earplugs under it or anything? I can't imagine the ERJ cockpit without something cupping over my ear, and I wear earplugs with that.

I dig it! With ear plugs in it's as quiet as a pair of DC's (the ear plugs I'm using have a 32 db NRR I believe), and if you can stand to have them in your ears then it's not too bad. I'm planning on getting some custom made ear plugs that fit my ear properly so they're a little more comfortable, but until then I'm rockin' ear plugs from Walgreens. You've gotta crank the volume on the audio panel, but it works well for me. The headset is light and comfortable and I don't mind wearing it all day.

In this plane anyway. Yeah I agree.

Do you use the ones that are yellow and pink? I've found them to be the quietest. I suppose I consider myself somewhat of an earplug connoisseur.

Nope! They're not condoms.

I bought a small pack of the pink and yellow ones at Menards (regional home improvement chain). They're great for the walkaround when the captain is a little too eager with the APU and the packs.

They are the best, I agree.

There is an airport that the most junior base flies to, I forget which one, but there is a very large EARPLUG DISPENSER in the jetway and it is HUGE! You turn a dial and the yellow/pink earplugs fall into your hand, one by one, like candy!! It looks exactly like one of those mike & ike type candy dispensers you see in bars, bowling alleys, etc.
