So my pos 5 year old ASA headsets just aren't doing the job anymore! I'm looking at purchasing a new headset and have been actively considering the Bose X headset. I can't afford to pay the $1,000 so I was planning on doing the payment plan. I've head a lot of good things about the headset, just curious what you guys thought of it. If I don't buy those, I was considering the David Clark 13.4oz. Just a little cheaper! FWIW I am a commercial pilot doing photography work and plan on getting hired with an airline when I graduate college in May of '09.
 
I bought mine on the payment plan,

They are great when the batteries have juice.

Dead batteries is bad. They have almost zero passive protection.

Other than that I have been happy with them, and they fit my head very well.
 
I wore the Bose headsets while instructing and flying piston twins. Extremely comfortable, but extremely pricey. They lasted me into my current seat (CRJ), but I ditched them for smaller Clarity Aloft's.
 
I used the payment plan and it was well worth it. I used it when i was instructing and in the 145. but i just sold it on ebay and got a set of mach 1. the battery lasted pretty long when i had it. over 40hrs i say...
 
I currently fly with the Bose headset. In my opinion, they are 10 X (no pun intended) better than the DC 13.4s I used to fly with. However, they are a bit pricey. And with me being paranoid, I'm always keeping an eye on them because I would hate for someone to steal them!
 
I have the Bose right now, and I love it. I don't think it's work 1k... but then again is any headset worth a thousand dollars? After completing the payments you would own a very nice headset IMO. I have 50 hours on mine, and I still haven't replaced the batteries!!
 
I purchased my Bose X when I was working on my Private license and it was all thanks to my instructor who allowed me to simply "try his on". I went to Sportys.com the next day and purchased my own. They are extremely comfortable and quiet. I do carry backup AA batteries just incase I get that druid red light. :)

I haven't had any issues with them, but if you do run into any problems I've heard they have great customer service and will sometimes give you a new headset if beyond repair. I can't attest to that though, just hearsay.
 
The Bose works well when powered, however, as has already been pointed out it is not a good passive headset at all. I fly with a Sennheiser HMEC series which offer great active reduction as well as being a good passive headset. However, my vote right now goes to the LightSpeed Zulu. Also a great active and passive headset, and with its Bluetooth capability its great for the times when you need to call FSS on the ground as you can now just dial on your phone and use your quiet headset and noise canceling mic without any added wires or cabling.

I also like how all of these other options are less than the $1k price of the Bose.

I was seriously considering the Bose X so that I can use my Lightspeed 30G's as a 2nd headset for pax, but ended up getting the Clarity Aloft - no batteries required and light as anything :) .
You can't go wrong with the Bose X though and sometimes I miss the ANR silence vs the ear plug silence with the Clarity Alofts.
 
I didn't like the Bose at all, they were uncomfortable on my head. I've used the Clark 13.4 for most of my flying and they are great. I recently bought the ANR version, 10-13 XL I think? I love them because the give both passive and active reduction. I think they are about $ 600 or so but it's worth it if your flying a few hours a day. The only thing I hate is the extra cord which seems to get tangled and twisted up in everything.
