Bonanza crash, 3 deceased - Angwin, CA

Operating out runways such as Angwin always make me pay extra attention to what is going on.

ANGWIN (CBS SF) – A single engine airplane crashed and caught fire in the community of Angwin in Napa County Friday morning, killing the pilot and two passengers, officials said. According to the FAA, the pilot of a Beechcraft Bonanza missed the approach at Angwin Airport-Parrett Field around 8:40 a.m. The plane clipped trees and crashed south of the airport. “At this time I can confirm, tragically and sadly that all three on board are deceased,” said Napa County Sheriff Oscar Ortiz. As of Friday afternoon, their identities are pending further investigation and notification of next of kin.

That was one of my landings on my PPL solo cross country. Shortish, narrow strip on the top of a hill with tall trees at both ends.

The winds can get a little tricky there. Easy enough in a 152, but anything faster requires a good stable approach.

Per someone who witnessed it, bounced the landing and initiated a go around, clipped some trees but was able to keep going for awhile but then stalled in.

Had an…interesting…customer I trained out there. Insisted on basing out of there instead of Napa. I spent a lot of time touring wineries when it was unflyable. Weird strip, from what I remember there’s a taxiway to the runway threshold that the locals use as a runway for a bit extra length.
