Boeing 797?????

Did anyone else know about this or was it just me or is it fake?

Look at this new aircraft...guess we are not going to be outdone by
the French A380. Ain't this something....! Boeing to take on Airbus
with (1000
seat) giant 797 Blended Wing plane Boeing is preparing a 1000
passenger jet that could reshape the Air travel industry for the next
100 years.

The radical Blended Wing design has been developed by Boeing in
cooperation with the NASA Langley Research Centre. The mammoth plane
will have a wing span of 265 feet compared to the 747's 211 feet, and
is designed to fit within the newly created terminals used for the 555
seat Airbus A380, which is 262 feet wide. The new 797 is in direct
response to the Airbus A380 which has racked up 159 orders, but has
not yet flown any passengers. Boeing decided to kill its 747X
stretched super jumbo in 2003 after little interest was shown by
airline companies, but has continued to develop the ultimate Airbus
crusher 797 for years at its Phantom Works research facility in Long
Beach, Calif.

The Airbus A380 has been in the works since 1999 and has accumulated
$13 billion in development costs, which gives Boeing a huge advantage
now that Airbus has committed to the older style tubular aircraft for
decades to come.

There are several big advantages to the blended wing design, the most
important being the lift to drag ratio which is expected to increase
by an amazing 50%, with overall weight reduced by 25%, making it an
estimated 33% more efficient than the A380, and making Airbus's $13
billion dollar investment look pretty shaky.

High body rigidity is another key factor in blended wing aircraft, It
reduces turbulence and creates less stress on the air frame which adds
to efficiency, giving the 797 a tremendous 8800 nautical mile range
with its 1000 passengers flying comfortably at mach .88 or 654 mph
(+-1046km/h) cruising speed another advantage over the Airbus
tube-and-wing designed A380 s 570 mph (912 km/h) The exact date for
introduction is unclear, yet the battle lines are clearly drawn in the
high-stakes war for civilian air supremacy.

While the photo is a fake, I wouldn't be surprised if Boeing really is working on more blended wing type designs. Blended wing sounds like a decent concept if they can make it work.

Actually that is an original McDonnell Douglas design. Boeing only found out about it post merger. Is it a reality at this time...hell no! But they claim to be pondering it's existance in the very distant future.

they were saying it wouldn't be very good because people would get claustrophobic.

TONS OF MIDDLE SEATS, very few window seats.

Cool. I wiki'd 'flying wing' and found lots of early designs were done by folks that I have no idea whom they are.

I found this too...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_Sonic_Cruiser Hadn't thought about this one for awhile.

This may just demonstrate my ignorance, but wouldnt it be better aerodynamically to have the engines ducted inside the body of the aircraft a la B2 bomber? That just looks ungainly to have those giant engines hanging back there.

I could see that... besides, how many people do you know would buy a ticket for only one certain day, one takeoff time?? people have business everywhere at different times of the day etc... i doubt they could get 1000 seats sold!

the thing looks way too front heavy...

I think it takes a bit longer though.
It depends, some ships these days so well thought out. I would hate to have to see them empty those cruise ships because I dont see any life raft, I only see life boats. It takes about three minutes to launch each boat, versus thirty seconds for the life rafts.

When they were doing sea trials on the new high speed ferry they had to do emergency exit drills. They are required to get 100 people off in two minutes. So, twenty minutes for one thousand people really isnt too bad.

Well they can do it with ships.
Yeah, there they just have to give people a life jacket and say "Jump":)

I heard in the news just a few days ago, another group of researchers from various countires have been looking further into the flying wing concept similar thi this picture. They don't expect any real prototype till 2025.

It would suck to be the passenger who is furthest inside the wing from the center line. Imagine how much upward and downward movement they would feel as the plane rolled.

Probably. But consider the maintenance advantages of the pod-mounted engines.
