BLM to ACK

Hey Everyone,

Been lurking here for a while. Love the site and all the information that is on here. I am currently a student pilot at BLM in NJ. 60 hrs and getting reading for my check ride. I work in Corp America and fly for recreation. My job is demanding and getting out to fly is a great release for me.

Anyway to the point, I am looking to go to ACK (Nantucket) at the end of July and to fly from Newark cost about $500 and driving up really sucks. I want to try and find a way to fly up and use it to get some more dual xcountry experience. I talked to my flight school and they seemed a little apprehensive. The FBO directed to me a few pilots on the field but I have not gotten any response.

Anyone have any good ideas or know of anyone in the area that would like to take that flight?

Again, thanks for all the information on here.

How long are you going for? Why can't your CFI go?

Post some fliers at the school, maybe some other pilots just passing through would be interested.

I'm surprised no one wants to take a trip to ACK. It's really beautiful, although is quite busy during the summer. Sometimes ACK is tough to tell apart from a Gulfstream/Cessna/Dassault sales line.

Anyways, I'm assuming most of the CFIs at your local field are apprehensive about the over water portion of the trip? It's really not a big deal and if you fly the right route/altitude you will remain in gliding distance of land at all times.

If I was closer to BLM I would have loved to help out, but I'm close to the ACK with a good deal of experience there.

I know someone from BLM that will fly with you. I actually flew with him today. Send me a PM and I'll give you his number.

This site rocks and this is why I love flying and the people involved in aviation.

Thank you for your responses so far.

If it doesn't work out with citationkid send me a PM and i'll fly with you...I am flying through Nantucket a couple days a week, and will give you dual along the way.

GUNIT- I think it maybe the distance and over water portion. I have never flown up there but I hear the flight is awesome.

Seggy- I am using EV. When did you instruct here?

Did you fly the meat wagon for the jump school across the runway? I was there in the summer of 2005 too. You remember Carlo O.?

I have been wanting to fly to that area for a while, Block Island, Marthas Vineyard and Nantucket all look like great places to fly into and hang out for a weekend.

If your school is leary of the open water, go the long way, up the Hudson corridor, turn east after the Alpine Towers depicted on the NY TAC, then hug the coast, cross to Marthas Vineyard then on to Nantucket. It adds an extra 40nm to each trip, but it would be a great flight!

Have fun!

Matt - Original plan was to go out over LI. I will propose your flight plan and see if they bite.

Going out over Long Island is something like 80 miles over water to Nantucket with only 10 miles of that or so having a chance of gliding to land in the event you turn into a glider. Going an extra 40 miles out of the way to guarantee a dry landing spot seems pretty reasonable to me. If I was available to go with you, I would certainly press you to take the dry route. :)

Jpax- sorry I was not very clear on the route. I planned to go over LI to avoid Hudson River corridor and then cut across the sound to CT up and over block island and MV to ACK. But the HRC is fun to fly up too.

CB im a controller in ACK if you feel like getting a tower tour or have any q's about the island shoot me a pm

Hey MIKEOh you GPD guys seem to have ALOT more traffic coming in this year compared to last, nice to have your business, and there are no wendys or mcdonalds on the island lol ;);)
