Bird Strike

Tonight out of Houston FO calls V1 rotate. 10 seconds later a very large bird SPLATS into my windshield and totally obscures my view. Had to deviate INTO rain to try and clean some of it off. Landed with very limited visibility and had a very big mess. Gal running jetway almost threw up looking at all the guts and feathers as I slowly passed by.

Any fun or interesting bird strike stories?

I had a very similar experience climbing out of IAD a couple years ago. It was already dark and we were almost 5,000 ft and 200kts. The landing lights were still on....next thing....something huge coming our way. BANG! It scared the crap out of us.....it was a very large bird. Probably a Gull or something similar. Well, this bird exploded all over my windscreen....nothing but blood and feathers all over the place. Wow, with the force of the impact, I'm glad it didn't come through....could've gotten real ugly (for me....it was already ugly for the bird :p). It actually did crack the outer layer of glass (found that out after it got cleaned up). Anyhow, I couldn't see anything, good thing I was PNF at the time. Then DING, the flight attendant called us and was asking what the noise was....because it got the attention of everyone on the flight, including her. It was winter at the time and when we got back on the ground this mess was frozen on the plane. Quite the experience.....I've hit other birds before, but never like this one.

Sorry, no pics....it was dark and I didn't have my camera anyhow.

I skewered a small sparrow type bird on the right side pitot probe. It was still sitting there when we landed.

Also, back in the Seminole I hit 3 egrets while landing. Sheered about 2 inches off the right prop blade.

Hope noone minds a wannabe post. My girlfriend's dad loves to send me pictures. I guess he's trying to discourage me from dragging his daughter into poverty:rolleyes:. Maybe you guys have seen these. Before you click, be warned, they are pretty graphic and unpatriotic (C-130 vs. bald eagle).

Nice!

I have the opposite of a bird strike story. I was still in GA and flying my Cessna when a seagull appeared off below the left wing tip. We flew together for a bit before it went on its own way. It was a magical moment.

We were on arrival to BNA in a 727 and one of the flight attendants was in the cockpit telling us a joke. All of a sudden:

WHAP!!!!

It was dark so we had no idea what happened so I thought, "PROTECT ESSENTIAL!!!", then we turned the light on and the captain said, "I guess we killed it!"

The flight attendant screams like she's running from an axe murderer.

We hit a bird and it had impacted right on the bolt on the windshield wiper. Part of it's carcass was wedged undernear the blade and the other part had separated and smeared all over the FO's windscreen!

Split that bird in half!

There was a Brasilia crew flying along when they suddenly hear screams from the back. After a few moments the FA calls and informs them that a bird hit the left prop and splattered all over the windows.

Sweet!

I learned that if you take a bird in the engine it is best to shut off the bleed air to the pack from that side as otherwise the plane starts smelling like a KFC.

This happened to a guy at my old company!!

I was demonstrating S turns across a road to a student west of San Antonio when he shouts,

"Oh #####, bird"..thud

It's wingtip hit our wing. We landed at T89 and checkd for damage, cleaned of the bird guts, called our maint supervisor, and flew it home
