Bike MS

I just finished the second day this afternoon. 75 miles on saturday and 75 on Sunday. This was the 30th Anniversary.

Cool! Congrats and a great cause for sure. Always neat to participate in big rides and especially two big days in the saddle.

I'm doing my ride in September up in Frankenmuth, MI! These rides are a blast, and it's great getting together with a bunch of people for a fantastic cause.

How's your taint? I could never ride that long...but I also don't have a bike suited to ride 75 miles/day. Good on you for doing this!

Does it really work? I can't bring myself to use it..I bought a sample the last time I was at the bike store but haven't gotten around to it. Most of the time I'm fine..but back to back days was a bit much.

It does work, wonders actually. Funny thing is, I raced for a lot of years without and seemed ok without it. Little did I know what I was missing. Now I won't go out for short spin without it!

Just rub it in to your chamois and you are good to go!

I might have to check that out. I'm normally in pretty good shape during rides, but if it helps, I'm all for it!

So what would be a good road bike for about $500? I want to start getting into biking but am a total newb. Thanks in advance.

Hard to come by to be honest. A decent road bike starts around $1,000 new. The good news is though, it is heavy on the up-front cost and cheap once you have your bike + gear. So as long as you don't go upgrade crazy you will be fine.

This is a fun bike on sale at REI...

I once wrote a big write up a big post on buying a mountain bike. Maybe I can re-tool it for road bikes soon.

Thanks so much for riding for a such a great cause.

It's the least I could do, This was my second year doing it and they really do make it an enjoyable for everybody involved.

I'll try it next time I go for a ride, thanks!

I got my bike a year and a half ago. It seemed like in the winter months they had pretty good sales at the local bike shop. I paid 650 for mine, I think it was normally around 1,000. But I've put almost 4,000 miles on it without any complaints. Sure it's not a "racing" bike, but I've raced in it and it worked out fine.

That stuff is great, I used Body Glide in the past and it just isn't the same. I got a saddle sore (OUCH!) and switched to Chamois Butt'r and have been a happy customer ever since.

You can always try Craigslist, but if you don't know much about bikes it's a bit more difficult. You're coming up on the time to find the best deals, the demand for bikes will drop from late fall though the winter and the prices will as well.

I found my Fondriest on Craigslist for $500, but the person selling it didn't know what they had. I made over $1000 bucks on that bike, it was hard to sell but I got a deal on a SuperSix I just couldn't pass up.

There are a few on Craigslist but, like you said, I don't really know what I'm looking for.

PM me if you find some bikes and I will take a look. I would recommend looking for something with at least Shimano Ultegra components if you are going used. You want nicer components that can take a beating from the previous owner and still work well.

I'm guessing a SuperSix is a really nice brand? would you recomend it for a beginner? (if they had the money)

It's made by Cannondale, and I wouldn't really recommend it for a beginner unless they were planning on racing. It's not the smoothest most comfortable bike I've ridden, but it is one of the stiffest and most responsive. I've ridden other bikes that really soaked up the road vibration and had more of an upright fit, but that's not my riding style. It would all depend on what kind of riding you're doing.
