I like the ones by Jeppesen.

Depends.

If your goal is simply to blast through the written, get the Q&A book that's cheapest. I used the Gleim and missed only one question on my private written. When you're actually ready to LEARN the stuff, take a look at the Jeppesen Private Pilot Manual, ASA's Pilot's Manual series, and Rod Machado's Private Pilot Manual are among those that I've looked at.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who's done their written prep solely through watching videos, be it Sporty's, King, etc.

for learning: Jeppesen Private Pilot Manual and Rod Machados Privat Pilot Handbook are both very good.

for passing exam: just pick up any test prep book( i.e. gleim, jeppesen, king..whoever) just make sure it has the questions the answers and a brief explanation. they should all be almost identical, cept the cover of course. I like the Gleim cause its red. so get the gleim.

For my ATP test I went to faatest.com. It's test prep software that you can emulate the test center formats. They work pretty good!

For $100 you can get the test prep for "Private & Recreational / Pilot • IFR • Commercial Pilot, Fundamentals of Instruction • Flight Instructor• Instrument Flight Instructor"

Just beware of Machado's jokes...some of them can be lethal

I recently bought the Jeppesen PPL manual from Amazon...it comes with some sort of CD, should be interesting. Microsoft Flight Sim '04 has some excerpts from Machado's book in it's Flying Lessons, and it seems pretty good too.
