Is it a DQ? Just got diagnosed w/it yesterday. Doc perscribed Valtrex. I am a little concerned about the facial poralisis, but am told it will likely go away in a few weeks.

What should I do doc? I am a little freaked out right now!

One of my FO's had it. It isn't a dequal that I know of. Make sure you comply with your company regs on the meds, usually after a first couple days if you have no ill effects you are ready to rock.

Did he have to quit flying while he had it? It's a major PITA. I look like a stroke patient right now. I know it's going to freak my students out for sure. Good thing it's the right side of my face, the one they can see.

Man, sorry to hear about this. From what I understand though, the prognosis is generally pretty good.

Prognosis is really excellent for this - could be lots of things that brought it on. One thing to keep track of is your eye on the affected side. One of the major problems with Bells is that people cannot blink their eye, it dries out, and then damage happens. Many people will put a piece of surgical tape on their eyelid to hold it shut at night. Make sure your eye is protected and doesn't dry out.

The eye thing is whats most annoying. I have been putting eye drops in to keep it moist. And It's been getting worse throughout the day. I think it's time to go home.

Not really sure what causes it. Like mentioned lots of things. To me it seems more like a carpal tunnel effect. The 7th facial nerve that passes through the skull swells and becoms pinched, hence the paralaysis. Or so I read on the net. I had the same thing, for about 6 weeks. Freaked me out when I looked in the mirror and realized my right side was retarded. The not being able to blink factor sucks, but be carefull when you eat. Take care and wait it out.

I had it several years ago, from what I remember the facial paralasis went away in under a week.

I hope I have it like you did, my doc said YMMV. Was your's complete paralsis, as in zero movement, or less. Currently i have almost zero movement in the right side. Looking in the mirrior, my right side also looks to be about 5 years younger. No crows feet, no wrinkles in my forhead (some say it's a five head, but whatever).

My wife had it once while pregnant--went away after the pregnancy with no complications. It was a swelling thing--

My mom got diagnosed in the late 90's and it has still not gone away. It is now a part of her life. As for the eye, her's frequently waters and she gets tear drops out of it. Quite the opposite of the drying out others have mentioned.
