Becoming A CFI

Hi All:
Can someone tell me what is involved in getting a CFI rating? How many writtens, and what are they? How many hours are required for the training?
Also, are there any books or training courses out there for the ground portion training for the CFI? There are tons for private, inst, etc, but I don't see much material for CFI. I m currently looking at King's CFI course. Looks pretty good. Anyone use this?
Thanks!

Louie

Have a look at 61.185 and 61.187. Those will lay out everything you'll be doing during your course of training. Also, pick up the CFI PTS for more in-depth info on specific tasks.

Assuming you do your CFI or MEI first, you'll have to take two writtens: The FOI (Fundamentals of Instruction), and the FIA (Flight Instructor - Airplane). If you intend on getting your CFII, you'll have to take the Flight Instructor - Instrument written as well. They're not incredibly difficult so long as you study. I personally used ASA Prepware and did well.

If you do your CFI training under Part 61 (as I did), the amount of hours will vary. I had a total of around 35 total hours of training for my CFI/CFII/MEI combined, with about 25 being on the initial certification. There's a recent thread in this forum that describes this from different standpoints. There are no required hours for your CFI/CFII/MEI, so long as you're found proficient (okay, if you want to be nitpicky: 3 hours minimum /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif).

For the ground portion, I personally suggest that you use FAA publications. At the very least, pick up the Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (PHAK), Airplane Flying Handbook (AFH), and the Aviation Instructor's Handbook. Those worked very well to get me through, but I know plenty of other folks that have used different methods.

Let us know if you have any more questions.

You will also have to become proficient in saying 'right rudder' repeatedly (gets to be a tongue twister after a while), and sweating only on the right side of your face.

you too? one of my guys, i tell him "nick, full power in the climb" and he puts the throttle up to like 75%. "nick, push the throttle forward..." "ok." "all the way up." "ok." ...i push the throttle up. "oh, all the way up?" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif

Then there's the guys who will put full throttle then put their hand in their lap. Good times when you pull it to idle /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

And the guys who dont check the fuel level because 'the gauge says 10'

And the guys who steer it with ailerons on the ground

And the guys who land crabbed into a crosswind... that doesnt exist

And the guys who are pissed you were on the controls, even though you just saved their life

And the guys who want a flight review sign off in the minimum time after not flying for years

GOOD TIMES! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/insane.gif

What? Just one of those. I'd say at least half dozen of my students are like that. Maybe more /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Same thing happens on power reductions too. I say, power to idle, and it gets reduced about 200 RPM /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/insane.gif

How about when they are practicing stalls and they start pushing the nose forward when they aren't even close to stalling. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

And it's not just 'forward' it's PUSH THE YOKE TO THE FIREWALL NOW! and the next thing you know you're on the ceiling.

Get used to being with your student 3 hours and only getting paid for 2. Also have fun explaining how not to do three wheel drifts when exiting the runway.

I charge for every single moment I'm with a student. I make that very clear in the beginning, and they have no problem with it.

Of course, they dig me because I don't charge for no-shows.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
