Bankair Lear Tip Tank Strike at MKC

A Bankair Lear came into MKC this morning running a little late. According to witnesses, they aligned for runway 21 realized this at a short final, and "sidesteped" to 19, they weren't stablized and stuck the right wing tip tank and went around. I saw a "vapor trail" coming from the plane as they flew the pattern, but it turned out it was the tank leaking.

The airport was shut down for about an hour for clean up and inspections. Fire department had to hose down the area, but no one was hurt and even the cargo was able to make it to it's connecting flights.

Anyone else get caught up in this mess this morning?

Since it sounds so strikingly familiar to a Lear 25 incident at IAD a few months ago, I figure it probably looked a little sumfin' like this when they got done.

I would imagine that included the crew. To get a tip tank, it takes a fair amount of bank angle. The old -23 I flew got a tip tank in KRIC.. and the other tip tank.. and then the first tip tank again before rolling inverted.

From the NTSB report

REMARKS- PLT ON DUTY 20 HRS.COPLT ON DUTY 18 HRS.

Say whaaaaa??!

Reportedly they were practicing single engine approaches and had both engines in idle from being high/fast. On the go-around, they punched up the previously 'dead' engine instead of the engine they had trimmed for. That's when the ride got wild.

I instructed in the 20 series and you GUARDED the simulated 'bad' engine just so there would be no confusion on go-around. Contrary to what it looks like the 20 series takes ALL the rudder on a single engine go or on a V1 cut. ALL.
