Jumbo Jet carrying hundreds of passengers grounded when baggage container is sucked into engine

Hundreds of passengers were left stranded yesterday after a Jumbo Jet from Los Angeles to Japan was grounded – because a metal baggage container was sucked into its engine.
The Japan Airlines Boeing 747 was preparing to depart a terminal gate at Los Angeles International Airport when the incident occurred.
Airport officials said the vacuum created by the air intake of the engine was so strong that it pulled the empty container off a baggage cart that was either parked or driven too close to the aircraft.

Australian passenger Carol Van Schellen told how she was waiting for the plane to taxi down the runway when she noticed police cars suddenly appear on the ground.

'I noticed there were police cars escorting us and I thought: ‘hmmm that’s strange',' she us quoted as telling 3AW radio station.

'But they were actually trying to stop us I think and I looked out the window and there was a big luggage container sitting in the engine.

‘I don’t know why the pilot hadn't noticed it but I think we were about ready to go and he announced that we had a slight problem with engine no 1.'

There were no injuries among the 245 passengers and 18 crew members onboard the flight.
Stranded passengers were taken back to the terminal where they made arrangements to take another Japan Airlines flight to Tokyo this afternoon, or booked on flights with other carriers said a spokesperson for Japan Airlines.

Police patrol cars surround the plane as it is grounded. It's thought the incident may have occurred because the metal box was parked too close to the aircraft

I'm pretty sure that from the cockpit it's pretty difficult to even see the wing tips of a 747? Polar?

Pax didn't say anything before it got that far out onto the taxiway? Well I guess pax don't do know to do anything except complain about entitlement. :sarcasm:

I personally watched a passenger try to tell the FA about heavy smoke coming from the engine, and a Flight Attendant chewed his @$$ because she couldn't do anything, they were next in line for takeoff, and she was NOT going to call up front when they're in sterile cockpit.

So, sometimes the crew members are idiots, too.

We all know planes taxi down the runway:

This person seemed clueless.....

I have been to atleast two airports where taxi for departure was done on the runway.:)

Lets be fair. Consider the source......to the average pax, the above is exactly what you do prior to takeoff...they don't know any better. Not clueless just because she's not versed in aviation nomenclature and operations.

Ah, that is very true as well.. well whatever happened, now there is a B744 with a container in the enjoy.

HAHAHA what a non-aviation normal person loser... :sarcasm:

Would your mother know the difference between a taxiway and a runway? Are we really that cool to be the aviation know all?

This was no accident...
This airplane can fly on 3 engines so why use all 4?
The real story is that some smart guy in management figured out a great way to increase cargo revenue without expensive airframe modifications!...
