So I started taking Bactrim on Friday, Feb. 26. I went back to the doctor on March 1 and he told me that my staph infection was looking good. I continued taking my Bactrim, twice a day, and I continued working/flying at both of my jobs.
Fast forward to Sunday, Mar 7. I did not feel great at work that day, but I made it through. I got home from work at about 9pm and started to feel like crap. I went to bed about 11pm and woke up at 2am with a fever and the worst chills I have ever had. I continued to have a fever and chills all day Monday. My other symptoms were complete exhaustion, headache (that still hasn't gone away), really swollen lymph nodes, tightness in my chest, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, nausea, a really sore neck, and a resting heart rate of 120bpm.
On Monday, I went back to my doctor and told him what was going on. He referred me to a specialist. I still kept taking my bactrim.
On Tuesday, I saw an infectious disease doctor. He asked about my symptoms and then asked if I had a rash. I told him no, but in all honesty I hadn't taken the time to check myself out in the mirror. When I took my shirt off my chest and arms were red and splotchy (sp?). The doctor flipped out and said, "Bro, you got a BAD rash."
It turns out that I am allergic to Bactrim. I haven't taken it since Tuesday morning and I am still feeling like crap. The fever and chills finally stopped but everything else is still hanging around.
When I got my prescription filled, I took the time to read the information with it. All of the symptoms I have are listed as possible side effects. My mom told me I had been on Bactrim as a kid for about a month with no side effects. It just goes to show that as great as modern medicine is it isn't perfect. You never can be too sure about a medication and you have to watch out for the side effects.
