Aviation movies

They do look bigger on film. I got to see the replica Belle fly at the Tico Airshow last year (I've got video but it's a friggin' HUGE file), and I've got pics of me and my dad in front of the real Belle as well as popped in to look at how the restoration is going. A group in Memphis, TN is attempting to restore her to flying condition. Talk about a huge undetaking...

Here ya go for the documentary: Amazon.com

Oddly enough, I also found a copy (not the 60th anniversary edition) in the bargain bin at Wal-Mart!

[/ QUOTE ]

Thanks for the heads up on where to get the documentary.
As for seeing the real Memphis Belle in flight, that would definitely be cool, but your right it would take a hell of a lot of work.
Oh, one more difference between reality and the movie- when the real Memphis Belle touched down after her 25th mission the crew was met by the King and Queen. As for the cranking down of the wheel just before touch down...I'm not to sure of this!
grin.gif
Anyway, it was a really good flick.

No cranking down of the wheel. They came back without a scratch. Actually, the Belle's last mission was flown by a totally different crew since the original crew had already flown 25 missions but the plane itself had only had 24 + 1 abort.

www.memphisbelle.com

That's the site where you'll find most of the history as well as info on the restoration.

Two different Iron Eagles...

Remember how Chappy fixed the "mixture problem" with a lil wrenchwork and some gum to seal to nose cowling?

[/ QUOTE ]

Thats awesome!

I think I dig Iron Eagle a lot, because all the planes used were that of the IAF, and those pilots are bad ass. Those guys in my opinion are the "best of the best"...Sorry MikeD

They're OK. But working with them is somewhat a pain, doctrine-wise. They just to some things different. It's sort of funny, though, a non-mil guy rating one military air arm as superior to another. They've got their good and bad just like any other nation.

My vote goes to Hot Shots!

Being serious though, I thought The Right Stuff was great. Battle of Britain too.

Does the IAF have A-10s?

[/ QUOTE ]

A-10 is non-export item. Thailand was the only country remotely about to get them, but they ended not getting them.

It was in my opinion MikeD....

I guess I wasn't clear enough, since I'm from the Jew Crew, I was partial to the IAF. But I'll take our boys any day over them cuz I love my country. However, doesnt the IAF have the best air superiority record though? The Yom Kippur War for instance they took no losses against Egypts forces.

Also, their standards for choosing pilots are much higher (from what ive heard between both country's pilots). Pilots in Israel start with a "score" of 100% and each "problem" the pilot has, the score gets knocked down. Only those with the highest precentages are picked for flight training. For instance you must be in 100% health, etc. for the IAF. In the US military, there are waivers you can get to fly; that doesn't exist in the IAF. From the few ex-pilots I met, they however, are some of the cockiest pilots around. They called the 172SP a "paper airplane" when I was telling them about the new one with the G1000s.

In any event, those boys don't have the B-1,B-2,F-117,etc,etc,etc......The real bad ass birds

Kell...from what I remember the US has given the IAF the: F-4, F-15, and F-16. They still have the old school 707s (old engines) for their tankers (some VIP) and a bunch of C-130's. For helis, they also have the AH-1, MH-53, UH-1, and AH-64. I leave anything out?

Battle of Britain was great.

I've never seen Top Gun.

[/ QUOTE ]

I finally got to watch Top Gun tonight, for the first time.

I forget the name of it but that old movie with the guys tryin to perform the first outside loop was pretty good.

Interestingly my old roommates dad flew f-14's off the carrier they filmed Top Gun on, he said Tom Cruise was a [censored]....but Kilmer was cool.

Israel had the "corner on the market" on recency of experience prior to the Iraq war, and even more prior to Desert Storm. Now, everyone is about the same. The record of the IAF is indeed good, but then again, look who they were fighting. The pilots of Syria and Egypt weren't that good. What these countries had going for them was a good ground-based air-defense system, which really wreaked havoc on the IAF in the 1973 war.

Main reason their standards are so much higher is due to the few pilots in the IAF. Fewer people/slots equals more stringent standards to get the job. We saw the same thing with the USAF in the few years during and post Desert Storm in the Cold War drawdown of military forces.

Not much need for the IAF for strategic bombers........would be kinda scary if they did have them, politically speaking!

Don't forget the A-4 also. For helicopters, don't forget OH-58/Bell 206s.

I am dumbfounded that no one has mentioned "Strategic Air Command". That movie is awesome. Great footage of the B-36 and B-47. As far as I know this film still hasn't been released on DVD.
What the hell is up with that?
I want a four disc set with so many documentaries and behind the scenes bloopers my DVD player will break from the hours spent watching them.
Hey I can dream can't I?

Is that the one with Gregory Peck as a baseball player and a pilot?

James Stewart, yes as a baseball player and pilot.
He was actually a pilot in the Army Air Corps/USAF

How about the The Dambusters?

[/ QUOTE ]

Already been mentioned, but you are right, it was a really good flick. Love the bouncing bomb and the Lancs.

Eta71- you're right it was James Stewart. I was thinking of Gregory Peck in Twelve O'Clock High (the movie, not the tv show).

Suggested reading: "Bogeys and Bandits: The Making of a Fighter Pilot" by Navy/PanAm/ Delta pilot Capt. Robert Gandt (retired). This book, which follows a class of "nuggets" (pilot trainees for the Marines and Navy; do the other services also use this term for their pilot trainees?) through training for the F/A-18 Hornet, shares your view of "Top Gun" - then makes the comment that a copy of this "camp classic" (as Capt. Gandt called the movie in an Email to me) can be found in the personal collections of Navy fighter pilots. When I Emailed him to ask him about the logic of this, that's when he referred to it as a "camp classic" because of the exaggerated swaggering of the characters and the "over-the-top soundtrack accompanying the afterburners".

Good rebuttle (sp?) .....Ya, that would be pretty scary if Israel had something like a B-1. Its like having a cocked, loaded weapon.
