Caught two aviation-related movie previews at the theater today ... a horror flick titled "RED EYE" and a suspense drama w/ Jodie Foster called "FLIGHT PLAN."

Not sure when they come out ... saw while awaiting to see the INTERPRETER which was a really good movie.

[/ QUOTE ]Moviegoers will be on the edge of their seats as they see the gathering storm clouds and wonder if the young pilot will EVER get a hold of a St. Petersburg Flight Service briefer to put her flight plan in!

Anybody know any more info about the new one supposedly coming out soon......"16 Right" ?? It was talked about here before but nobody is totally sure when it's gonna be released....the movie website doesnt say either.

It's been said many times before but after I saw it on TV over the weekend I just have to say that 'Top Gun' is one of the dumbest aviation flicks ever. It just sucks!!!

And don't get me started on 'The Airport' series...

And one more thing. 'Turbulence' with Ray Liotta and the chick from 'Dumb and Dumber' was garbage too.

How can you hate on Top Gun? Its cheesy, but a classic! You don't get the urge to fly something fast after watching it?

The first Airport, with Burt Lancaster, Deano and Joe Patroni in the role he should have stayed in, was the best of the series. Fairly accurate and quite entertaining. Don't knock the second one, either.

Oh, the second one? You mean the one where the guy in the Baron is calling ATC with the wrong N number (the one he says and the one on the side of the plane are different in half the shots)? Isn't that the one where they fish Charlton Hestin's stunt double through a 747 window? Possibly one the best stunts ever, though.....

Yah, I do want to fly something fast after watching it (preferably Concorde). However, apart from the tremendous shots of the jets- this is the only positive aspect of the movie, everything else makes me cringe. An awful, awful film.

And as for Airport et al.- I stand by my original statment. Garbage. Pulling a 747 up out of the water with ballons after having been under the water for however long it was (Airport 77)...I mean come on!!!! The first one was the only bearable one and it was subpar at best. How they ever managed to milk it to four movies is beyond me.

But it's so darned quotable!

Plus, one of the pilots that flew in some of the scenes is one of my pals.

My parents always told me that there were no Jews flying military jets and why would I want to go do that?? (They're all about the stereotype of their boys becoming doctors,lawyers,etc....but not me

)

But in the closing credits of Top Gun when they show the "real" pilots names, there was a pilot with the last name Schnieder with the callsign "Rabbi."

Ever since then, I always wanted a shot at the military.

Unfortunately I needed the Farnsworth Lantern test for the FAA, and the military supposedly doesn't use that test anymore (only the ishihara plates)

As far as the movie Airport goes...Thats another cheesy classic. But I'm sure most of you loved Joe Patroni...Who doesn't wanna be "the guy" in the airline who helps move stuck planes, and guides stricken ex-AA 747s to the ground?

Dude, Top Gun rocks. The plane/carrier portions of the movie more than make up for any part that may be cosidered sub-par. Having served on a carrier I have an even better appreciation for the fligth portions of the movie.

As for Airport.....the unbelievable parts are unbelieveable. But get this.....IT'S A MOVIE.....

They don't call 'em accidents anymore. They call 'em Patronies!

Or my fav: "That's one nice thing about the 707. It can do everything but read."

I happen to have the Airport: Terminal Pack here with me. Nice to have all of them (bad or otherwise) in one convenient DVD set.

Thanks Doug. I read that when I first joined, and showed them immidiately. I don't keep Kosher, etc. but I do like a good matzah ball soup or corned beef on rye

To me it doesn't matter. I'll fly on Hannukah for all I care

Any other "fellow Heebs" out there that have heard from their parents, "there are no jews flying commercial/military airplanes!" ??

What about Airplane.... Another absolute classic that takes every piece of aviation lingo, and twists it in great humor.

Elaine Dickinson: May I offer you anything to read, ma'am?
Old lady: Do you have anything light?
Elaine Dickinson: How about this leaflet, "Famous Jewish Sports Legends?"

Rex Kramer: Striker, listen, and you listen close: flying a plane is no different than riding a bicycle, just a lot harder to put baseball cards in the spokes

Roger Murdock: We have clearance Clarence.
Captain Oveur: Roger, Roger. What's our vector Victor?
Tower voice: Tower's radio clearance, over!
Captain Oveur: That's Clarence Oveur! Oveur.
Tower voice: Roger. Roger
Murdock: Huh?
Tower voice: Roger, over. Roger
Murdock: Huh?
Captain Oveur: Huh?

Rumack: Captain, how soon can you land?
Clarence Oveur: I can't tell.
Rumack: You can tell me. I'm a doctor.
Clarence Oveur: No. I mean I'm just not sure.
Rumack: Well, can't you take a guess?
Clarence Oveur: Well, not for another two hours.
Rumack: You can't take a guess for another two hours?

Captain Oveur: You ever been in a cockpit before?
Joey: No sir, I've never been up in a plane before.
Captain Oveur: You ever seen a grown man naked?

"I WONT ROLL ON SHOMER-SHABBAS, DOUG!

The sabbath....

Which I'm allowed to break, only if it's a matter of life or death........

Don't F***in roll! SHOMER SHABBAS!

One thing about Top Gun (great movie btw, just dont take it too seriously) is that a lot of movie and tv shows have always taken clips from it when referring to "naval aviation" (JAG being the worst offender).
For those fans of WWII aviation like myself:
Pearl Harbor (2001)- terrible movie, absolutely terrible. It had the worst most far-fetched inconsistent plot even being loosely based on history. I was actually embarassed that it carried the same name as such an important battle. However, the planes and replicas they had were outstanding. For a good Pearl Harbor based movie see Tora! Tora! Tora!
Midway- one of my favorite movies. Big name cast (late 70's) Heston, Fonda, Mitchum. War movies don't get much better than this.
Battle of Britain-amazing as well. Has the best aerial battle scene in any movie. Watch it on a big screen and you will see. I think it was made in the mid-60's but it holds up amazingly well to the stuff that comes out now.
Twelve O'Clock High, Flying Tigers, etc....required viewing
