Attn: People sending out resumes / cover letters

For those of us sending out cover letters/resumes, my question is this. What method do you use, to keep track of who you sent items to, and when to follow up?
I am trying to get a good system down, and so far, unsuccessful. I am thinking of trying software program (ie. outlook or ACT 6.0) but not sure if that will do it.

When you send a cover letter youll save it on your computer. Your cover letter to that company will have the current date. Problem solved.
