I was assuming the pilot in question did some SEL solo training to prepare for the check ride. In this case, an endorsement to be a PIC in a SEL is required; normally, insurance does not permit this in a MEL so it is not an issue. On the check ride it is normally not an issue as the DE is there and insurance will cover this.

Sorry, 61.31(k)(2). I always do that because I always confuse 61.31 with 61.63.
Anyway,
(k) Exceptions. (1) This section does not require a category and
class rating for aircraft not type-certificated as airplanes,
rotorcraft, gliders, lighter-than-air aircraft, powered-lifts, powered
parachutes, or weight-shift-control aircraft.
(2)The rating limitations of this section do not apply to--
(i) An applicant when taking a practical test given by an examiner;
(ii) The holder of a student pilot certificate;
(iii) The holder of a pilot certificate when operating an aircraft
