Just got back and from the training center and have a new temp cert for ATP and ERJ-145 type!
The circle to land in VMC only is a Type rating thing. Only limitations on your physical certificate are something the FAA puts on it (I.E. on a cfi cert they put "Must be accompanied by certificate number "XXXXXXX" , and "English Proficient" . I'd like to see a circle to land in IMC sometime.... that'd be interesting...Congrats! Just a question. Does the circling restriction go on your ATP, or your type rating?
They do have circles below vfr mins. Lots of them. For example, KSGU, circle mins are 1 1/4 on the LDA for cat a. This is below basic VFR minimums (which is imc). The circle to land in VMC only is a Type rating thing. Why would you get such a restriction? They do have circles below vfr mins. Lots of them. For example, KSGU, circle mins are 1 1/4 on the LDA for cat a. This is below basic VFR minimums (which is imc).
A circle VMC-only simply means that you can not circle with less than 3SM visibility and a ceiling of 1000 feet. Nothing more.
I circled at mins once. It was the NDB in Crookston, MN. UNDies might know what I'm on about. One of the more eerie things I've done in aviation. It was at night and the runway lights are medium intensity only. The only prominent thing, or what caught my attention most was the airport beacon. Didn't like it. You know me though, I'm a Sally! Why would you get such a restriction?
But as other people have said, all circles are conducted in visual conditions.

You get that restriction when you do a type ride at an airline that is prohibited from doing circle approaches below vfr mins. Because the procedure is prohibited, you can not perform one.Why would you get such a restriction?

True. I got my initial ATP at Ameriflight, so I can circle on my ATP, just not on my cl-65.If your company chooses not to have circling below 1000/3, you're not trained or tested on it, thus the restriction. Not all that uncommon for 121 operators.
Some individuals have no restriction on the ATP, but individual types. Some who get their ATP through their employer will have the restriction on the license.

You're a hundo driver too? Sweet! I loved the 19 hundo days!I can circle a 1900, but not a 75/76.
But if I'm circling, something has gone terribly wrong and it's probably going to be emergency authority at that point anyway!
