ATC Zero

Airplanes fly on PFM, Change my mind
I think we should preemptively limit all air travel in ATC controlled air space from any flight not 121 and maybe 135..? I mean it as a way to lessen ATC workload as cases of Coronavirus impact their ranks.

There are multiple facility issues right now.

I think we should shutter ATC and open up Alpha to free flight for a spell. I mean, hell, we've all got ADS-B and TCAS.

I see this as the most likely scenario for a total stop to domestic flying in the US. The airlines can hedge as much as they can and protect their OCC staff by segregating them, etc, but that is not so simple in an ATC center. When ZAU went down it was hard enough. Imagine two or three centers offline. The SCC will not allow it and will order a complete ground stop of the NAS.

They might ground commercial flights but the cargo will still operate. No way will they let the cargo birds stop flying.

They’ve canceled every other aspect of the American economy so nothing would surprise me at this point.
Cargo is mission critical keeping the economy afloat, while transporting medical supplies.

Maybe it’s not bad yet but I’m just thinking of getting ahead of as much as possible. With KZID I’d like to see the low and high sectors morphed into 1 in a way. Idk how they do their jobs so that might not actually be feasible, just thinking in general telling Bob he can’t fly his Mooney IFR FL100 is a good idea for now.

Just my opinion, but let me tell you what, I sure hope by Monday (when I work next) there’s a playbook for every facility. It’s not bad now but it’ll probably get worst.

I've seen the federal document stating which industries/jobs are considered critical. Keeping supply chain lines open is critical and there is a huge shortage right now. Shipping rates have tripled.

2 positives at ZNY and 1 at LGA tower today. No word on if they’ll be shutting down or nitn
