Army Warrant Officer Flight?

I have a high school student who's interested in possibly working on his private pilots license, his goal is the Army's warrant officer flight program.

Can anybody walk me through the general qualifications and selection process so I'm a little more knowledgeable about what he might be facing?

Someone told him that going in holding a PPL may improve his selection chances? Is this true?

I tried to get into this program in 2010. I had a PPL and a two year degree. The problem I had was finding a open unit. I was trying to go reserves. My recruiter and everyone else I talked to said going active in the WOFT program is the easiest way to get a flight spot.

I would venture to say that a PPL was NEVER the deciding factor on whether someone was picked up for an aviation slot in any branch. In fact, most military flying procedures are quite a bit different than their civilian counterparts, resulting in a lot of relearning of basic concepts while you go through flight training.

In all the pilots that I've had come up through the E-6B pipeline, I can probably name 3 that had outside flight experience prior to joining.

Now, if he wants to learn to fly for the love of flying, great! If he's thinking about investing money in an attempt to impress the Army, I'd tell him to hold off.

While I don't have expertise in all the ins and outs to get in as an active duty warrant, these sites should get you (him) started.

I do have direct knowledge and involvement in selecting future warrants for my State's National Guard though. A PPL would certainly help an applicant for us, but wouldn't make or break him or her. The one thing it does show me is they have an interest in aviation outside of the usual "I was a grunt for a while and thought flying a helicopter would be cool" answer I'll typically get on a flight board when I ask about their interest in aviation. A PPL would show an interest in aviation, but so would reading flying magazines, playing flight sim on the computer, or having actually talked with aviation warrant officers prior to the board.

I can't say for sure, but the members of my active duty selection board seemed to take in to account prior aviation experience. However, he should also get at least a 2-year degree. I'm at Rucker now just starting instruments, and it seems all of the other street to seat Warrants in training have at least a two year degree. I haven't met or heard of any who are straight out of high school. I know a few who don't have any college, but they are all Guard or Reserve with prior service.

One of my LTs may be in your class...

I guess this question is for Ian J, just curious of my chances of being selected if you can help me. Ive been on AD Navy for 7 years (E-5) and have 3 months left of Active duty and transfering to the Navy reserves to finish my BS in Aeronautics fulltime which i only have a year left to completion. I already have an AS in Professional Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle and looking at a checkride for my PPL in the next month. I'm also 25 yrs old. The only downfall is that I was arrested 2 years ago for driving 20mph over the posted speed limit.( yes, this is what i was arrested for, and the cop was a Marine reservist) However my driving record doesnt show anything on it. And my eyes are 20/50 correctable to 20/20. And I am still separating from Active Duty with an Honorable Discharge. Do you think I have any chance in getting selected?? Any help is greatly appreciated

I couldn't tell you, unfortunately. I have no visibility of AD selections.
