This gouge is about 8 years old, but I don't think things have changed much, and I offer this for whatever it is worth:
if you really want to fly for the military (and do nothing but fly), I've always thought that the Army WO program was a great way to go. Military pilot/officers (in all branches) are officers first, pilots second. Most spend at least some part of their service engaged in non-flying assignments. Army warrant officers, on the other hand, do nothing but fly. And they fly a lot. The downside to the Army WO program, in my opinion, was that they are heavy on the rotary-wing side, and I really only wanted to fly fixed wing. The Army also does not have any fighters (someone may correct me if I'm wrong about this), if that is what you are interested in.
Two more cents: I had the opportunity in my younger days to go Navy OTS with a pilot slot, and I passed it up. Biggest mistake of my life.
