Arabic handwriting found in magazine cancels fligh

No, If I was a Crew Member on board I would have done the same thing. The fact they had just recently pushed back makes them a slam dunk IMO. Why take the plane flying if you have what could be a security threat.

Re: Arabic handwriting found in magazine cancels f

You know, here's something to think about.

Know what the country with the highest Muslim population is? Here's a hint. Get your mind out of the middle east, cause it's not there. Here's another hint. It's a democratic nation and they just voted out their current leader.

Still don't know? Okay, I'll tell you. It's Indonesia. It has a population nearly the size of ours, with 240 million people. By comparison, Iraq has 25 million, Iran has 69 million, and Saudi Arabia has 26 million.

And they've got their own problem with Muslim extremists.

Know what Indonesians look like?

Ready to profile nearly two billion people?

How in the world does some Arabic writing, inside an in-flight magazine, constitute a security threat?

I don't get it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Arabic handwriting found in magazine cancels f

Just because there is arabic writing on the mamganize, it doesn't mean something is going to blow up. Well we don't really know if something will or won't blow up, but cancelling a whole flight for something like this doesn't seem very logic in my point of view.

Of course, one advantage they'd have over us is, they could probably read the scribbling.

What do you mean?

Re: Arabic handwriting found in magazine cancels f

Yeah, except their Muslim extremists do NOT fit the profile.

Take a look a the ethnicities of the people in Indonesia and then let me know what you think about profiling.

Re: Arabic handwriting found in magazine cancels f

I cant read arabic, Id at least like to know what it says, Wouldnt you?

I'm not sure what proflie you are talking about. Are you totally focusing on race? Real security profiles look at more things than ethnicity.

Re: Arabic handwriting found in magazine cancels f

I agree. Maybe they judged the cancellation based on what it said on the magazine.

<nitpick>

Race and ethnicity are two seperate things, and actually security profiles look at ethnicity (a group of people who hold common thoughts/ideas/beliefs/generally live together etc). Ethnicity is exactly what profilers look at. THey look at the specific religion (not just islam but what particular type) they look at skin tone which is a pretty bad indicator, where a person is from, etc.

Race is nothing more than a social construct

Re: Arabic handwriting found in magazine cancels f

if you read the article, it says that what was written was more philosophical, more of a prayer.

I understand the thought of why take the plane flying if you have somtething that could be a threat, but that is my question. I really question why Arabic handwriting would be considered a threat. I did not see it in the article, but I wonder who found the writing. My guess is someone that rarely flies and just got panicky when they saw something that was outside of their normal routine. My gosh, it's something different, stop the plane. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

One the one hand I feel cancelling the flight was overkill but then again how careful can you be. I'm wondering what the airlines policy is?? Indonesia is a very scary part of the world. Unless you watch BBCamerica you have no idea what really happens in the rest of the world.

Yeah, the sloppy, easy "let's stop them cause they're middle eastern men" profiling. That's the kind of stuff that most people think of.

Now, if you want to profile based on behavior, well, not only is that much more effective and useful, but it also is not racist so it has that benefit as well!

Re: Arabic handwriting found in magazine cancels f

Anybody get a translation on what it said? It's probably some guy's grocery list or the crossword puzzle. It may have even been someone's idea of a sick joke. I could probably "fake" arabic by drawing squiggly lines that looked like it. To me, this was a SERIOUS overreaction. Besides, if a terrorist is making a threat, don't you think they'll write their letter in language the target can understand?
