AOPA Article...Academy Flight Training. Hmmm

Malko

Why…..? It’s so tiring. 🤙

I just received my AOPA Flight Training mag and there was an intersting article on the various Flight Training Academiesd. WHile the article said it is not an all-encompassnig review, I found it a little strange the A.T.P. was not even mentioned. I wonder if AOPA has some negative thoughts regarding the short 90 time frame (yes I know there is the 10 month option). The other academies listed were all quite a bit more expensive than ATP. Could AOPA be receiving a little $$ kickback for not even mentiong ATP.

They seem like a major player and I was suprised they were not mentioned. Some of the ones mentioned were Delta/Comair (or whatever), Westwind, Gulfstream, Region Airline Training.

Is there some conspiracy?

No conspiracy. Thumb through the magazine and then tell us who has the majority of ads in the mag.

Chances are, your answer is right there.

that's what I figured, but here you go:
ATP - 1, Pan Am - 1, Westwind - 1, DCA - 1, MESA - 1, Sierra - 1, Regioanl Airline Academy - 1, and Ari-Ben - 1. These were the major ads, not including the flight training section in the back. There was an ad for Embry-Riddle saying that they were hiring for CFI's with a min. of 500 dual given. It appears they are not pumping out enough candidates from theire program. Either that or business is going like gangbusters.

I guess it depends upon how you define "academy". ATP resembles the other "academies" very little. If they had all their equipment and students in one place, sure; but scattered across the country, they seem more like an ordinary FBO-type flight school.

Not only is Embry Riddle CAPT falling short but the students do not get COM SEL or any CFI ratings so they could not hire them back even if they were pumping them out.

did they actually praise them, or just sell out with an advertisement?

Just gotta know.. Cause of AOPA is gonna say anything good about Gulfstream.. man..

Guys, as someone who sells advertising, just because you sell the space doesn't mean you care for, or endorse, the company that bought it. You just took their space order. And unless it's really out of line, you'll let them run it.

What happened with ATP? I guess they didn't want to spend the money. More often than not, that's what happens, and there's no conspiracy.

Yeah, I read that article, too. They said some pretty positive things about Gulfstream and even DCA. I didn't read any negative things about anyone but ATA. 'Course there was the whole 'you should do your research on any academy' line.

The strange thing was that ATP did have a full page ad. I know there was no conspiracy, it was just my lame attempt at sarcasm (forgot the /sarcasm tag). I guess the question should have been does AOPA view them any different because of the 90 day program. I just figured that ATP seems to be a pretty big player, to not be mentioned in the article. Their quoted price is much less than the others as well.

Just want to put my .02 in really fast. I think the artical was about "academies", not flight training center. In other words, these are places where you have a class of people you work with and wear a uniform etc. In doing the artical the way I think they certainly didn't help inform a lot of uninformed people. That and the bit on Gulfstream was absurd. "$90 an hour for a 1900 is really cheap!" Yeah. Sure.

Something else to keep in mind is that somebody from AOPA probably did not write that. It was most likely put together by the marketing department at each school and submitted to the mag. AOPA probably only edited slightly what they were given.

As previously stated, it was an article about the "Academies" only, so take it for what it's worth. Also, as a side note, it was written by Wayne Phillips, the guy that does a lot of the AOPA career articles and also the head of the ATOPS program down in Houston, where you get B-737 sim time, as stated before in previous posts.

Overall, Wayne is a very good guy, but I don't get AOPA sponsoring the PFT. It's the industry's curse for the immediate future
