Depends on how much you want to spend.

I bought a K2 Disco Monkey Frame
All shimano XT components
Eggbeater pedals
Avid Disk Brakes
Rockshox Psylo Sl fork

All put together for a bout 2200$

This bike excels at slickrock and takes a hell of a beating after falls and is capable of jumping from about 6 feet without damaging it, even though I never will. But when I bought it I was mostly using it in the Southern Utah area including Moab.

does that say 2200... that would mean my bike is worth more than my car....don't need anything that fancy the only thing my bike will be jumping is out of the way of traffic.i ride bikes just about as good as my first landing...

I have a Gary Fisher.. It's great. I got it for a little under 500 bucks. I would go and check out some local bike stores and see what they have from last years models.. You can usually get a pretty good deal. Try getting them to go down in price or get them to throw in free stuff..

Check out www.mtbr.com ...They have a really good forum and some good reviews.

For the extra hundred or so dollars you'd spend to get a 'real' bike, you'll shave off about 10 pounds, take a major step up in the component group, and get assembly and adjustment by people who actually know what they're doing. On top of that, the bike will last much longer and ride oh-so-much better.

I've worked in bike shops on and off for years (gotta get the wholesale deals to avoid paying $2200 or more . . . ) and would recommend looking at the three to five hundred dollar offerings from the 'big three' - Trek, Giant, and Specialized - as well as Gary Fisher, Kona, and any other smaller brand that catches your interest. Test ride everything that you can and get the bike that feels best. They all have their differences, but in that price range they all equal out quite evenly. A good bike shop is there to find the right bike for you and your needs. After you've ridden a few at the shops, go to Wal-Mart and ride a N.E.X.T. You'll run from the store in terror.

Just be honest with the bike shop staff. If you'll only take if on a trail once per year, you might not be happiest with a mountain bike. Test ride, test ride, test ride!

Good luck and tell us what you decide on.

But if you don't want to spend the money, I'd agree it is best to go visit a shop, and ride as many as you can. Or visit more than one shop.

Do you ever take it off road even?

If you want to go cheaper still, with absolutely zero risk, then buy one at Costco. If it falls apart, take it back, and get your money back, or get a new one. For as long as you own it. For casual riding, this is likely more than most would need, once or twice a month sorta thingy.

Or cheaper still, look used.

www.craigslist.com likely has a section for your area. Or look at local garage sales. My brother in law basically can't give away an old rock hopper he has. Think it was a few hundred new, and no one bought it at their yard sale the other day, sign on it for $45. In like 90% new condition.

If you really want to shed the pounds, get a skateboard. Or, if you're planning on commuting on it, a longboard.

Bikes really fall into the category... You get what you pay for.
