Anyone here vacationed in russia? Im thinking of taking a trip to moscow either next summer or this fall. Dont want to go when its too terribly cold. Im wondering where you stayed, how much it all cost, and what airline you flew on. the quotes i am looking at range from 600$-1400$. and the availability of flights doesnt seem too broad. Any info one might offer would be appreciated.

I've never gone, but I have heard that St. Petersburg is much more worth seeing than Moscow.

I was going to pop up to Kaliningrad when I was in Poland, but it required a visa and a 90-day notice, so I couldn't just pop up there for the weekend. Don't know if that applies for all other tourist trips to Russia or only those originating from Poland.

Ive never gone, but my grandparents made it out on a cruise to St. Petersburg, if you're interested in cruises. I do speak a little russian though

Doug and I have talked about going and have been doing some research... also keep aware that St. Petersburg is also known as the capital of corruption and they have a very high crime rate!

YEAH, st petersburg was on my list of places. really havnt looked at a map yet and planned it out, but wanted some input on those that have been. I lived in berlin germany during the collapse of teh wall...and then moved shortly afterwards. i always wanted to see eastern europe a little more indepth than just east berlin. i figure a trip to russia would take care of that. I was in praque 4 years ago and loved it. so cheap and during the summer there is lots to explore outside the city.

Corbin went when he was a teenager. He won't be able to help tell you what place to stay at, but he might have some info on places to see or to not see if you need help in those areas.

it would be nice to know where and when to go places. since i dont even know how to say hello in russia...and the extent of my topographical knowledge comes from "spies like us" movie any info is appreciated. Im trying to find a partner for this trip...no way in hell im going solo.

Um hello in Russian is quite possible one of the longest words I've EVER had to learn. It's like "zrdazveetyeh." Best I can do without a cyrillic keyboard. Never been, but I've always wanted to go. My Russian prof in college went every year and lived there for a while before becoming a teacher here.

Come on, if there was no Corbin, I'd be having everyone of you "availables" over for dinner. Well, except the "old" guys.

Enjoy if you go ... but a word of caution. My brother was over in one of the former soviet union countries last year (not sure which one ) and on his last day on his way the airport he stoped at a street vendor and bought some coins and currency for his 10yr. old as a novely item. At the airport he was arrested and charged with smuggling Antiquities out of the country. He was able to leave with his group ( He is a preacher and was on a missions trip ... not sure if that had anything to do with it. ), but about a week after arriving home he was served with an international arrest warrant. As long as he never goes back to that country they won't enforce the warrant. Who wud of thunk it?

I am actually from Moscow. It is a wonderful city and I visit every year. You will have a wonderful time, just bear in mind that everything is pretty much written in Russian, although that is changing. As an American you will end up paying more for things as there are lines for Russians and Visitors to Russia at museums and the sort. I will be there this summer as well (depending on Mesa training and if I even got hired). If you are single...well you will have a great time. If not, you will find other things to do. The night life is very much alive down there. Let me know if you have any other questions. I used to live in Kutuzevsky Prospekt which is where the former government officials lived and is where the Triumfalnaya Arka (Triumphant Arch) sp? is. If I will be in Moscow during that time I would be more that happy to show you around my home town.

Pretty wild tale of international mystery. That would suck to get arrested over there. When I lived in berlin the US govt was always warning us of the dangers of being arrested on the wrong side of the border. Im getting excited for the trip...hope i can make it work.

anyone know what airlines run which routes over there? most everything i see is running through frankfurt...what should i expect to pay.

plague
n 1: a serious (sometimes fatal) infection transmitted by the
bite of an infected rat flea (especially bubonic plague)
2: any epidemic disease with a high death rate [syn: pestilence]
3: any large scale calamity (especially when thought to be sent
by God)

All right, I'll quit.
Just couldn't resist.

My mate flew Aeroflot 10 years ago, in the height of their difficult times. He flew from London to Australia which took 28 hours - the ticker only cost $600.

Got to get my brain to work as fast as my fingers.

But, again, my word choice is excellent.

Aeroflot is not bad at all, I take them from LAX to SVO every year and I have enjoyed every trip so far. They had many problems in the past but they are a private company with heavy Eeuropean backing. I enjoy my flights everytime and it is a nonstop flight from LAX which is very nice.

Delta is the only US carrier to serve Russia ... they fly daily nonstops from JFK to Moscow. I'd fly them or a major European carrier. Northwest/KLM would work well via Amsterdam probably, or LH via Frankfurt. Just depends on what airline's frequent flyer miles you prefer to collect I guess.

I think it would be a fabulous place to visit. I speak a VERY small amount of Russian ... not enough to teach you anything. The worst part is, of course, the Cyrillic alphabet ... other than that it isn't terribly hard to pronounce any of it, unlike French.
