Anyone an FAA ASI for GA avionics?

I got out of the military back in January. 5 years as an avionics guy. The last few years were as a collateral duty inspector on Bell UH-1N, UH1-Y and AH-1W's. Also managed and audited several NATOPS 4790 programs. I work in automotive manufacturing now but recently started helicopter flight school and it's rekindled my desire to get back in aviation. I came across an FAA job posting on usajobs for "Aviation Safety Inspector - General Aviation Avionics" that, according to the job requirements, I'm a perfect match for.. probably into a GS-11 roll according to the FAA's website. The job was also suggested to me by the GA operations ASI that I did my student pilot certificate with a few weeks ago.

Couldn't find a more appropriate forum, just looking for some first hand experience. Anyone here ever held a position as an ASI or know anyone who has? There's not a ton of literature out there on the ends and outs of it... my guess is, though, that I'll never get a call because my experience with federal jobs is that they already know who they're giving the position to prior to posting it. Semantics of the bureaucracy I suppose.

FSDO jobs are actually a pretty good gig once you get past training.
That can be painfully boring!

Well I just went through the application process, hopefully it works out! Not sure what they're hiring process is like but I'm sure it will be long and drawn out if I'm lucky enough to hear back.

I received a letter February 1 to inquire if I was interested and was hired first of June that year so yes, long drawn out process.

I called the FSDO I'm interested in and they told me the positions at that office were filled. I applied to 6 other locations to try and get my foot in the door. The airworthiness supervisor offered to hold my resume for me for future openings.
