Any thoughts on ATP\'s new program?

Just got this email describing ATP's new Direct Track Program.
I'd like to throw this in the ring for debate and see what comes of it

Mainly to see if it is a worthwhile cause considering the money, etc. I'm suspicious of the rebate. Here's a description of the program.....Receive an airline job offer within one year of starting the Airline Career Pilot Program. ExpressJet Airlines (Continental Express) has a formal agreement with ATP to provide pilot candidates based on the qualifications and experience you gain in this program. Your success is backed by a $10,000 rebate and guaranteed multi-engine instructor position with ATP.

Re: Any thoughts on ATP\'s new program?

I'd rather instruct and save the money. Odds are you'll have enough hours in about a year to apply with XJT anyway. It's $32K just for the Direct Track. All of your other ratings are extra, so it would cost you $77K for everything if you got it all from ATP. That's a LOT of $$$$. I won't spend that much on my PPL-MEI ratings and my college degree.

Re: Any thoughts on ATP\'s new program?

I am currently looking into ATP also. Look at their placements page, and make sure someone from the airport you fly at has been hired recently, or if at all! I was looking into (LGB) Long Beach, CA. but I haven't see anyone placed at all! (This is cause for concern.)

Re: Any thoughts on ATP\'s new program?

I thought the 32K covered everything. I didn't even realize it was after their other program that costs 37K. There should at least be some sort about 5 or 7K on top of the main program. This is a rip-off!!!!!!!!!!!!
Funny how flight schools know that usual government education loans for college students can't be taken out, but yet they still have these outrageous training prices. At least some could come with vaseline
banghead.gif

Then the feds want to regulate it all, but don't do much of anything to help curb the expenses to the flight school or student. WTF?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?

Re: Any thoughts on ATP\'s new program?

You should look back a little further. In mid summer, Christina Sanchez, my original instructor at LGB, got hired by American Eagle. The person who replaced her, Erich, just had his second interview at Express Jet yesterday. I think two instructors in 6 months is a pretty good record, especially since it was a one instructor office until about a month ago. Anywho, you should stop by and talk to the instructors if you have questions. Their names are Erich (if he hasn't shipped of to XJet jet) and Tyler. Both are great guys and would be happy to talk to you.

By the way, I'm not planning to do the new program. But, I have heard that there may be a hire 'guaruntee' where, at the end of the program, if you haven't been hired within 'x' months, they will refund you 10000. Not sure if it's true, since I haven't really looked into it.

Re: Any thoughts on ATP\'s new program?

Happy for your instructors, but clearly, you haven't noticed the number of JC'ers hired by XJET who DIDN'T do ATP's expensive program.

Re: Any thoughts on ATP\'s new program?

Keep in mind that instructor placement at ATP is kinda weird. You normally have to sit in JAX answering phones for a while, then they send you where they need you.

Re: Any thoughts on ATP\'s new program?

I think ATP is a rip off. There are cheaper ways to get rating and time without a massive loan.

Re: Any thoughts on ATP\'s new program?

I'm pretty miffed that they got a deal to lower the minimums for ExpressJet to 500/100 for ATP students who complete the criteria. EXJT Agreement It also makes me wonder if the criteria listed doesn't include things such as the 20hours of Actual required, first class medical, etc,etc,etc..

Although I am an ATP graduate, I am dissapointed because I had also earned an internship with ExpressJet the semester before attending ATP. I interviewed with many other candidates for this job, and moved to Houston to attend it. I did not get paid for the work I did there, nor did I get paid for living expenses, moving expenses, etc... I sucessfully accomplished thier ERJ-145 ground school and did all the work in the office so I could have a an advantage to getting a job with ExpressJet later on.

I suppose I just find it dissapointing that I had done all this work to get that advantage when now someone from ATP can essentially buy thier way on by purchasing the program.

While I was at ATP, they always told me that "THERE ARE NO GUARANTEES IN AVIATION", however, now they are offering a guarantee. This ofcourse makes me very dissapointed in the leadership that was given too me.

Re: Any thoughts on ATP\'s new program?

There will always be people willing to pay. I for one, am not one of those people. Rip-off. I should have chosen a cheaper career.

Re: Any thoughts on ATP\'s new program?

Guys, I went to ATP and I know that they deliver exactly what they say at the price they quote. Now that I'm at a regional (not Express Jet) I see how similar the ATP program is to regional airlines. For example, the dispatchers operate just like what you will see at the airlines (albeit at a smaller scale). I don't know of any other program that delivers the multi-time, as fast, or the set low price that ATP does. ATP is a quality company. Take it for what's worth.

Re: Any thoughts on ATP\'s new program?

Sprint,

If you ask 15 people... your going to get 15 different answers. Everything from "It sounds like a ripoff" to "It was the best program for me".

Of course I'm sure that your point was to fish for multiple opinions in the aviation community... and that is what you should do. However, you ultimately need to decide for yourself what type of program is best for you.

Realize that lots of "Professional" pilots and CFI's are very loyal to their school or FBO, and others are extremely proud of the way they "did it", and they believe that that was the best way... and most likely it was... for them.

The best way to go about this type of research is to attempt to compare apples to apples vs. just thowing out a " What do you guys think of this type of program?"

For example... If you have the ability, funds, financing, time, etc. to go to an academy style flight school (pay close attention to what aloft and many others are saying re: loans)... then you should be asking a more pointed question of something like: "How does ATP's full program match up/compare to Pan-Am's/FSI's/DCA's etc...?"

If you are considereing an FBO route, and a pay as you go type thing, then you should be asking questions like "My local flight school said they'd hire me if I did all my ratings with them... but they cost significantly more than the flight school in the next town over... what would you guys do?" If you ask questions about pricing specifically you'll get guys in all parts of the country saying that it's a ripoff 'cuase the got 172's wet at their FBO for $25/hour cheaper... or other guys will say that's a steal 'cause they are paying $25/hr more at their FBO.

You would want to compare such things as Total cost versus time in program, total multi-time, what costs and ratings are included/excluded, are the costs fixed, what can cause the costs to fluctuate, what type of "professional" development is offered?

The forums under "Flight Training" section are a great place to start comparing these types of things from actual student/instructor testimonials... However, the best way to weed through it all is to actually call the schools that you are interested in and ask these questions directly. Then you can make up your own mind on what is best for you.

Sprint, I know you've been around these boards for quite a while, and most likely know most of this already... I am just putting it out there for the new guys trying to sift through this huge information highway that is JC.

To those that are interested in serious and professional flight training (FBO or academy style)... I would say the schools that Doug has allowed to sponsor JC is a great start to be looking into. Other than that... Folks... take your time... research... and have fun, it's a helluva ride no matter what route you take.

For what it's worth...

Bob

PS: I love the line in your profile... "Loving life with my wife, hanging out with the youth of my family, and buying things for my wife and daughter." I feel the same way... about my wife and daughter of course.

Re: Any thoughts on ATP\'s new program?

A former student of mine is currently at ATP instructing. There is a letter with ExpressJet allowing any ATP instructors with 500 TT to interview if they complete a "CRJ" course or something to the tune of $1000.

The other option, as he was describing it to me, is if you do not wish to instruct, and in this case you'd buy your time from ATP (hence the $30k+ additional price tag) to get to 500 TT to interview.

2 completely different programs for 2 different mindsets.

Re: Any thoughts on ATP\'s new program?

Damn, that's gonna kill all the people that already work at XJT. That deal lowers it to internal hiring minimums. I thought XJT was pretty much staffed now, especially with hiring deals extended to furloughed FlyI and Chi Express guys.
Would suck to pay that much, get the interview and here "Come back when you have 500 more hours."

Please enlighten me of a cheaper and better way to get training and hours.....i'm not being sarcastic dont get me wrong...but would like to hear what other options there are. I mean, obviously you still have to pay for the ratings. Then the time building. What other ways are there ??

Haha...I agree. I wouldn't give ATP the pleasure of getting my business for their price.

By the way...Skymates also offers a much cheaper rate than ATP.

I find it amazing that as much as some of you bash ATP and all of the programs it offers, I still find your comments throughout this board. If you don't like anything about it why are you always in here reading? Oh, I know, you are hear waiting until you can go on your next training flight.... in 3 days!

And, I'll say it again.... if all you want to do is fly in FL then by all means go to Ft. Pierce!
