Hey guys, the Aviation movies and such. thread got me wondering. Does anyone know of any good aviation movies out there? other than top gun.

IRON EAGLE!!!

Another film utilizing the talents of Art Scholl (flew in Top Gun too). Features Twisted Sister on the soundtrack with their hit "We're not gonna take it". A must see for any aviator.

:yeahthat: Not to mention the full flaps race through the desert with the Tramahawk.

The use of Queen's "One Vision" was better, though. :)

The repeated stock footage in Iron Eagle was a little annoying, even when I was a kid, but it was still a fun movie.

Art Scholl died filming Top Gun...I can't remember exactly, but I think it was during the filming of the scene where Maverick gets into that flat spin and Goose gets killed...

Three Guys Named Mike (A "chick flick" from the 50's.... very cute.)
Fandango (Kick-ass flying scenes and an un-beatable parachuting scene.)
Flight of the Phoenix (old and new versions)
The Right Stuff (My 4 year old's favorite movie of all time )

I was thinking about this movie last night! Wish it would come on cable.

Twelve O'Clock High. Not so much flying, but one of the best movies I have ever seen.

"Wings of the Navy"

That movie takes it back to the old school (1939) B/W. It falls under the drama, war, and romance genres. I recently saw it and thought it was pretty funny. Also liked the fact that it was actually filmed at the Naval Air bases of Pensacola, FL and San Diego, California.

or you always got

"Soul Plane" :D

I wonder what a flight instructor would think if he knew his student busted out the Sony Walkman, popped in Twisted Sister and did some ground reference maneuvers on one of their solo flights.

Just think, the kid in Iron Eagle was flying the F-16 and listening to the Walkman!!!!

Iron Eagle is among the worst aviation movies of all time. Its the Footloose of aviation. Nuff said. ;)

"Strategic Air Command" (sorry, old school). Jimmy Stewart was in quite a few good aviation flicks. He was also one heck of a military pilot in real life from what I understand.

Tora! Tora! Tora!
Empire of the Sun
Memphis Belle
The Right Stuff
Airplane
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

the end.

And for some more good aviation stuff (Don't hate me Hacker)

Head over to Hulu and watch the whole series of Carrier. Also, Speed and Angels.

:yeahthat:

Excellent recommendation Waco. The Air Force has used that in leadership training courses. Far superior to Memphis Belle, which I also liked.

Other favorites are Flight of the Intruder and Dr. Strangelove

What is the Gann movie that starred John Wayne, I have always wanted to see that, but cant say if it is any good first hand.
