Is there any version of headset/earmuff that will actively reduce or cancel the noise of engines on the ramp continuously, that you guys have heard of or use?

I've searched all over google and the most I've come up with are for pilots and shooting. I already have a regular flying headset and I don't want to buy something that will just handle impact noises or gun blasts.

Does it matter if they use directional microphones??

I just don't feel like my muffs or plugs are doing the job any more standing under the apu loading a 737.

any input on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

There are some better headsets than others. The company I worked for bought us Bilsom headsets, and I thought they worked well. If something really loud came in I would put some earplugs in underneath the headset.

How much did those run Alec? The foam earplugs are a pain in the butt, they're always falling off or freezing into stones. Still don't really cut it under an APU. REALLY sucks when you lose them and you don't have time to run in and grab another pair before you go near the APU. Literally so loud that it's hard to think.

The company bought them for us so I dont know.

Really? I've always used the basic foam plugs on the ramp in PHX at US Airways. As long as you actually get the plug up into the canal, I've never had an issue, even underneath the APU of a 737, and those things scream!

That is what I use. I just use a simple foam ear plugs. They do wonders and great when you are next to the apu of a rj. I think RJ apu's are a bit louder than a 737.

Ugh, the only thing those are good for are warming up behind in the winter. Second worst sound behind an air start. The foam earplugs work alright but they SUCK when it's cold out since they get hard (snicker) and you can't roll them back up.

That's why you don't take them out!!! lol

Yeah, for the terrible 6 months I worked for Mesa, I found a nice appreciation for an RJ's APU exhaust during the cold mornings before sunrise...

As far as noise, I truly believe a 737 is one of the loudest things on earth.

We've got a dozen headsets from David Clarke coming this week that are about $35 a pop so i'm hoping they will do the trick. Right now i am just using a standard set of headsets i bought at the local hardware store and can't complain too much. I just have to angle my glasses so they cover my ears 100% otherwise the APU's and MU2's kill my ears.
