I've read 61.51 and seen quite a few arguments on whether a CFII should log sim time or not. my question is what do you guys do? I did a sim with a student today... my understanding of the reg is that as the instructor im only allowed to log this in two categories in my logbook ("flight simulator", and "dual given"). is this correct?

How would you log it?

It would be wise to keep a record of what instruction you did give for future reference.

I'd have to look back, but pretty sure I always logged as 'dual given' only when I was teaching. Logging sim time doesn't really do much for you anyway.

:yeahthat:

I used to give a fair amount of instruction in the ATC 610. My take on it was that if I'm endorsing the "flight" in the student's logbook as dual received toward his instrument rating, I should log the time in my logbook as dual given. I filled out the columns labeled sim/FTD, dual given, and total flight time. Under the remarks section for each flight I would include the student's name and the number of the lesson (from our 141 syllabus) that we covered during that session.
