Ok I've noticed at bot www.webexams.com and www.exams4pilots.com that there are two, different Flight Instructor Instrument Airplane writtens available. One seems to be for an initial instructor rating andthe other is an added rating. The biggest difference between the two seems to be the length of the the test.

Question: is there, in reality, two different writtens for the same rating (Flight Instructor Instrument Airplane)?

Good question.....the CFII add on written I took was about 20 questions long and took me about 15 minutes tops to finish.

Are you sure about that? The CFII written/knowledge test is 50 questions.

See ... that's what I was thinking when I ran across the two different tests on two different sites ... did you have to specificaly ask for the "add on" version or was the proctor smart enough to know?

There actually are two different versions for the test... the CFII-Airplane which is the one you want... it's 50 questions long and it's the same test whether it's an initial instructor cert or an addon.

The other one is the CFII-Airplane Added Rating; that one is 20 questions and it's for cfii's in helicopters who want to add an airplane rating to the cfii cert.

I had some confusion when I took mine since it had a screen asking which test I wanted to take... had to look it up in the Gleim book.
