American Pilot Confronts CEO Over Uniforms

American distributed nearly 2 million uniform pieces last September to some 80,000 workers, including flight attendants, gate agents, baggage handlers and pilots from garment manufacturer Twin Hill. Almost immediately, flight attendants began experiencing health problems ranging from rashes and itching to respiratory issues.

Twin Hill says its testing has shown chemicals found in the clothing are below levels that would affect the wearer.

Catan—and thousands of crew members—would dispute that.

Catan said he arrives for work in good health but then suffers respiratory issues, headaches and rashes when he puts on the uniform and gets to the cockpit, noting that “reactions increase with wear.”

"I'm the canary in the coal mine," he said, according to the CBJ. "I don't have a safe environment. What are we going to do about it?"

Isom said several options are on the table, including new material and uniform combinations, with more coming.

American has declined to recall the Twin Hill uniforms but did give flight attendants options for polyester or cotton fabrics. Or, they could wear their former uniforms if it matched the scheme of the new uniforms.

Catan had another solution.

"Get everyone out of those (Twin Hill) uniforms immediately,” he told Isom.

The uniform pieces are high quality with 50% wool. This is most likely what is causing the reactions. I personally doubt there are any major chemicals at play. Anything you buy these days will have the same chemicals on them as they are all produced the same way, thinking your Kohls pants are any different is laughable (what most guys with issues are wearing).

I tend to agree. Once people decide they don't like something, they attribute any ailment to it.

There's something fishy about this uniform thing. Maybe it's just me but every article I see about it strikes me as nothing more than a union vs. company slap fight.

So maybe initially the uniforms had some kind of chemical on them (that no one has been able to find it seems) but like, once you wash them a couple times they should be fine right? I don't wear anything until I wash it at least once....

Uniforms are an odd thing.

Any slight change in uniform means lawsuits, complaints, etc. Especially amonst cabin crews. At the end of the day, most end up wearing the sweater over pants option anyway.

They had a red dress, among myriad options, but since it only came in a certain select number of sizes, even though nearly everything else was available in a wide variety of sizes, sparked threats of lawsuits because it wasn't available in size "whatever"

Another reason I'm pretty happy our pilot uniform is classic and largely unchanging.

"HWUT THE HELL YOU MEAN I GOTTA WEAR A DOUBLE BREASTED BLAZER? I'M SEWIN' YEW!"

I like it!

I literally have no idea who someone works for other than their wings. And barely even that.
US was probably the only airline that had a unique enough uniform (just by having skinny stripes) that you could tell, but even those are gone now. Does kinda make it funny when there's "pilot drama" and someone's attitude changes the instant they realize who you work for.

We are going to gray pants, coats and hats in the next few months. Some people are a little put out by it, but it seems like most guys don't care. Apparently the quality is really good.

Actually the TW shirts are as bad as everyone says they are. I wore the shirt for one trip and by the end, I had a pretty good sized rash on my neck. The pants and blazer are nice with the elastic stuff in them though. The tie is a little on the cheap side. After a few knots, the material gets worn out quick.

There's a carrier out there that had VERY blue shirts...Now they're light blue. Fairly distinguishable. (Tier 2 albeit so doesn't really count).

After a few knots? You're doing it wrong. Tie it nicely once and take it off carefully each day. :p

While there are maybe a few cases of guys being rebels, the uniforms are giving people problems. The shirts won't even last a year if you wore them. They are 100% cotton, and wrinkle so easily. So everyone just wears A Cut Above or Van Heusen.
