American Flyers CFI renewal

Well, I just finished it. It was kind of a joke. Eight total segments, all consisting of a minimum study time of 100 minutes. There was one section that had about 130 minutes of videos if I remember correctly, and some sections could be studied in as little as 35 minutes. But for the $125 for life, and the ease of doing it while sitting at home in my chonies:cool:, it was worth it.

Edit to add: Now I have no excuse to ever let my CFI certificates expire.

I haven't used their service before, but I'm planning on it soon. What's the process for getting the FAA paperwork done once you finish the online stuff? Their website seems a little sketchy on that part.

So far it looks like it just prints a certificate of completion, and you fill out an 8710. You can have them do all the paper work for you, but it costs an extra $50. I'll take mine to the FSDO and save the money.

Sounds good to me. Thanks for the info.

I just did it for the second time last month. The most annoying thing about it is waiting 100 mins to take the test. I'd forget and turn my computer off, then when I was ready to go I'd have to wait 99 mins. Oh well, since I paid for it 2 years ago it feels like I did it for free this time. You have to get the one certificate you print out notarized, my local bank did it for free. Then like you said, 8710 and off to the FSDO. I was really surprised, it's been 4 years since I instructed and I didn't have to fix a single typo on the 8710!

Hey, that's impressive! After doing probably 25 or so 8710s between myself and students, I still screw them up occasionally.

Hopefully, after I do my CFI renewal, I won't be worried about 8710s for a while. Of course, I'll be doing 8410-3s every 6 months...

I think the DPE's in Florida get nutty about doing 8710s exactly one particular way. Sort of like when you teach your parents how to do something on the computer and they think they have to double click every single button or link....

I showed up at the FSDO here in Hartford and nervously asked the inspector if everything was filled out right he just sort of mumbled, "yeah looks fine to me." I'm guessing it doesn't have to be as perfect as FL DPE's make it.

I just did the Jepp/AOPA renewal. There are 16 sections, but no videos. There are 10 question tests at the end of each lesson, but they are probably the easiest faa questions I have ever seen. None of the questions were really technical. So if others are looking to do this online, I just figured I would add some info about Jepps as well.

I think it ran around $120, but that includes them forwarding the paperwork. I am not sure if you can go to the FSDO and do it yourself on the Jepp one. I guess I didn't see where to print the certificate. I can print the 8710 etc...

Now, according to directions, I am supposed to fill out the stuff and mail it to them. I am supposed to mail my old CFI card as well. Not sure when I get a new temporary. Maybe it prints out when I print the rest of the stuff. We will see when I try it this week.

I just did the Jepp course in March and got my certificate about 1.5 weeks ago. The completion certificate the email you takes the place of the certificate and temporary airman certificate. They also have you make a copy of your CFI cert. to keep along with it to prove you are a CFI.

It all went pretty well and I got the completion certificate a couple days after they received my certified ail packet.

Took nearly a month to get the new card from the FAA.

The course was boring and a few hyper linked references out of date but otherwise pretty good.

Here is a tip for the AF Class: Google Chrome browser will not automatically time out, so you can leave it running and come back and take the quiz.

Has Anyone used the Gleim CFI renewal online? I have been reading the options on each website but wondered if anyone has used it. The training is based on a quiz you take at the beginning of the section and then you do the studying. Plus it seems like there are no time requirements for the completion of the program.

Any thoughts?

It's super easy. I believe American Flyers imposes a time restriction so you have to complete the course at the program's pace. Gleim's web based FIRC will yell at you if you go too fast but you can blow right through it. I personally like the Gleim product.
