American Eagle Bases?

Hey guys,

Can you tell me what my base choices would be if I went with AE? Also given the choice, would you work for AE or ASA and why (read the threads on AE, so I understand that long upgrade times might be a reason against AE, but if you have anything additional to add, I'd like to hear it)? I have interviews with both in a few weeks, so just asking.

Thanks.

Eagle:

DFW = CRJ, EMB & Saab
SJU (San Juan) = ATR
ORD = CRJ & EMB
BOS = EMB
LGA = EMB
LAX = EMB & Saab

Hope that helps.

Sure does - thanks so much!

As for the upgrade time-

Met a guy last night who got hired in '01. That was six years ago.
He says he's about 3 to 4 months from upgrade.

Given the three year period or so when Eagle did no hiring, that puts upgrade in the 3 to 4 year range, give or take.

Still not as fast as some places, but likely not as bad as you may have heard.

with the news of american selling off eagle a lot of senior guys are expected to leave for a more secure future and might just drop upgrade even lower. ASA has a potential of being domnsized if delta merges with another major. Any regional is risky and its a gamble. Both of those two are respectable places to work and treat their employees fairly well. If your going to gamble you should make a smart decision. Kudos to you for asking questions. a lot of people in your position dont ask questions and make bad decisions. search these forums and you should be able to become educated on the good and bad companies

You've said this twice, so I've got to ask: Where are the more senior guys going to go?

To another regional? To start over at the low-end? Doubtful.

I've flown with MANY of these "senior" captains and, for the most part, they are stuck. Many, MANY Eagle captains have 737 ratings, have interviewed with SWA more than once - and have gotten nowhere.

Many junioir captains have resumes in with other major airlines and are not getting calls.

Do you think the most senior captains will go to a major and take a paycut for several years (assuming you're talking about the captains, the FO's are an entirely different scenario)?

As for the FO's (speaking of that entirely different scenario): where do you think they are going to go? The legacies? Don't you think that better than 80% of them are trying to do just that right now but can't get in because they have no PIC??

It's not like these guys and gals have the pick of the litter of where they want to go, my friend.

I'm very interested in hearing your take. I'm not trying to slam you, but since you seem intent on pushing the issue that Eagle is falling apart, is a bad place to work and is not respected in the industry, I would like to hear some factual basis.

And what makes you think that Eagle is a disrespectful place to work? I know you said that you have two buddies who work for Eagle, but is that your only source of knowledge?

As someone who works for Eagle, I can say that, for the most part (with the exeption of scheduling) I've been treated with the utmost respect and have been treated extremely well.

If your friends have had different experiences, then I do feel for them, but my experience, and that of those I know, have differed tremendously.

Agreed.

And I believe you'll find Eagle to be right up there with some of the best.

Best of luck, psalm91! Drop me a PM if you'd like to talk about Eagle from an employee's standpoint.

Stan

Sleepy3528 did refer to Eagle as being a respectable place where the employees are treated pretty fairly.

I've heard check airmen discussing retirement, ie grabbing bennies and going. There might not be droves of them, but the move might be motivating some to leave sooner than later.

Take the Saab man!

Hey Firebird- why didnt you want the Saab?

Second year pay. As close as I was to second year scale at Colgan, going Saab here and waiting a year to make the same as I would have in six months back at Colgan didn't make sense.

I also wanted diversity in my trips. The Saab runs at Eagle are fairly repetitive and short. You get paid the same at cruise as you do being vectored for approach. Less work, more money.

The Saab is also a very small fleet. Its future is somewhat uncertain here. After what I went through on the Beech with Colgan, I wanted to avoid the "small fleet". Getting shunted into an unexpected fleet displacement at some random time was something I wanted to avoid.

Plus I wanted to learn the ins and outs of modern jet operations.

Nothing really against the Saab, but the jet just had better options for the next few years for me.

LOL!

You know...I suppose the reason I ommitted MIA could be that nobody is ever awarded MIA out of training. My understanding is that it's a senior ATR base.

Could be wrong. Probably am. :D

Eh.. my roomie during ground school just got MIA in the ATR.

D'oh!

If you're a pilot for AE and you're flying out of DAL are you considered DAL-based or DFW-based?

Or is that American Connection/Trans-States I'm thinking of?

Being based out of DAL, I think, would be pretty cool. I like that airport.

You won't be DAL based, but you can bid the lines out of DAL. Out of DAL Eagle only goes to SAT and AUS. Trans States goes to STL and KCI.

FYI, to anyone interested the base guarantee only applies if there are openings at that base. I got my second base choice and not my first. No biggie but something to consider when assuming your base is guaranteed when interviewing... Then again, they did tell me to bid my first choice once training starts.
