Am I the only confused one?

AE still wants to hire 400 more pilots this year. SKW is looking at hiring 70 a month through summer, then 60/month till the end of the year (rumor). That's almost 1,000 pilots just for the two of the. PNCL is handing out class dates. Almost every other regional is hiring too. Where will they get these kinds of numbers? That is what I'm confused about. Maybe I'm young, dumb, naive, etc. Are there really that "many" pilots out there that the airlines can find the numbers they want? I highly, highly, doubt there are that many qualified ones....

Pilot Shortage!!!!!

Not trying to imply that. I just can't see where there's that many pilots out there that tried to get in in the last rush of 06-07, but didn't, and are now qualified, trying to get back to the regionals. I figure they have all moved on to bigger and better things. That's why I'm asking. Of the 15 CFIs I talk to regularly, none, 0, zilch, want to move on to a regional...

I'm confused as to why there is this much hiring going on. I mean no majors are really hiring at all (a trickle at Delta and SWA). So where are these quitters going that's causing attrition? Also aren't fuel prices going up? I mean block hours can't be going up that quickly at the regionals. But again I'm pretty young, very dumb and blissfully naive, so hopefully someone more qualified than me can answer this.

Airlines always hire right up until furlough. We did the same in 2008. If you want to know what is going to be happening in 6-12 months, look @ SWA. They pretty much always are able to get it right.

Oh, also, had a Republic guy on the jumpseat, apparently they are hiring requiring an ATP (he thought for insurance reasons). They wanted 20 guys in two classes and 8 and 12 showed up respectively.

I don't know about other airlines, but we waited too long to hire (we were being set up to be sold) and are paying for it now. That's why we're hiring so many.

Well, you're almost certainly not the only one on JC who is confused. Look at jtrain, for example. Confused is his middle name.

Dedicated is my middle name.

I'm dedicated to being confused, also known as willful blindness. I simply refuse to allow myself to find you attractive, even though we all know you're pretty hott.

By all imaginary internet accounts, I am a very attractive man. I intend to keep the myth alive as long as I can, ugly.

No, they can't fill class with what they want. AE is down to 500/100, PNCL is a wet CMEL, RAH is holding their mins and getting 25%-50% of what they want.

They need to drop their ME times... 500TT isn't hard to find in pilots, but 100ME is hard... 800/100 and 500/100 really makes very little difference in the pool you're picking from

Isnt Pinnacle only accepting wet commercials from students of particular aviation universities?

What are the total number of furlough from Comair, Mesa and Horizon? I'm not thinking there's a net increase here.

I'll speak for OO. First I do not believe they are hiring 70 a month. They say 50, and it appears to be more like 30. Also I am not sure how it is at other regionals but we have a very high FO attrition rate (higher than captains). So if 30 are hired in a month, at least 10 are going to go somewhere else within the first year.
