Altitude Alerting Systems

Just curious as to what exactly an Altitude Alerting System is and some specifics on how it works on a normal flight, etc. Any help would be great! Thanks,

John

There are two types of systems in the 757. One is a light that comes at 900 feet before you reach the assigned altitude and goes out at 300 feet before. The other is a beeper that goes off if you deviate more than 300 feet from your assigned altitude. With the beeper, we get an alert message on our EICAS screen.

We have an altitude preselect alerter, which notifies us when within 1000' feet of the assigned altitude we put in the window. It also shows a amber light at the same time as the sound. The light goes out when within 200' of the selected altitude. The light also activates (flashing), as well as the sound, when we stray 300+ feet from the selected altitude.

When the autopilot is engaged, any vertical mode (vertical speed, airspeed, climb modes) will capture that altitude. So it serves and autopilot purpose as well.
