Yeah, I have a handheld NAV/COM. When I was doing the aerial survey stuff, I went NORDO right outside of BWI (there was a plane on approach right above me). I could hear them barely and they couldn't hear me at all. Luckily, one of the other planes could hear me and relayed messages for me, but the handhelds are not all they're cracked up to be. Since then, I don't carry one...I have enough stuff to carry around. And since I'm IFR all the time, I would just use lost comms procedures.

One of these days if/when I get back into flight instructing, maybe I'll carry it again just in case, but probably not.
