All is quiet on the Eastern Front

Standing my last duty day and bored. Figured I'd jump on JC again before making rounds for the night. How many of you vets remember your last duty? I watched colors tonight and was all smiles as I realized, I will never see colors in an official capacity again.

Oh, I remember it alright!! I was more than ready to go!!!

I do remember cleaning out my desk and wall locker, making sure I had all of my personal effects and ensuring that all of my MP3 files were deleted off of the machine in the classroom...

Good days, Bro, but the best ones begin after that DD-214 comes in the mail!!!

Did you ever consider the reserves???

I am thinking about it. I would only have to do 8 in the reserves to have some retirement at age 60. I can't decide.

I did a year in the Guard. Don't do it, Dog....really.

I respect the Guear/Reserves alot, because they do a great job. If you're active duty and you change over, though, you'll be disappointed (unless you're Air Force....

). It's just too laid back.

Might as well be a complete civilian, in my opinion!!!! They all seem to have that "weekend warrior" attitude....

Congrats Shooter,

My life has improved dramatically since I separated last October. I’m in the AF Reserves now and its great fun, same job, same Base, flying on the same jets, only the people I fly with actually smile and enjoy being there. Plus, I only have to fly every 2 months or so to stay current. Even if it wasn’t for that, the GI Bill and TA bennies are too good to pass up.

BTW, the Aviator is still going great! I’m scheduled for my Instrument Checkride next week. Drop me a line before you get down here and I’ll give you the grand tour.

The Guard isn't quite the "weekend warrior" biz it used to be. Guys and gals coming and going all the time, our unit does, however, have a very high ops tempo although I'm not sure how it compares to other units.

Anyone have experience with the Navy reserves? I am not sure I'd want to go to a different branch. I don't think i could go to say the AF and keep my rank.

I'm quite certain that you could!!!

I have a Naval Reserve Seabee friend.....if that counts as Navy....

Yeah I am in the Navy Reserves. The life is really relaxed from active duty. All we do all day is sit around and talk mess all day. But the only hard thing is the guys with aviation rates. We don't have a job! And the area for which we are attached to doesn't have any work for us. So aviation guys evals aren't as great as those pencil pushers. But who cares anymore, tired of the military, join the reserves, where there is more of an civilian lifestyle.

So MTSU, you think its possible I could go from E7 in Navy to E7 in AF reserve? I'll call a recruiter and check it out soon. I know several guys in the Navy reserve so I know alot about what that is like.

PS 70 till sep leave, 102 till civilian!!!

I know a few guys who did it the other way - they left as Captains in the AF to be LTs in the Navy.

A lot of it depends on your specialty. If the AF has a need for the specialty, they'll probably take you on the spot. If they don't, then it might be harder.

Seems to me these days they should be willing to take anyone. When I got out, I got hit by stop loss; seems kind of odd that they might not take someone else when they are preventing people from separating.

Shooter,

Congrats on a successful career. You'll miss it more than you realize....I do. I tried to hook up with a VP reserve unit as a Sensor 3 and all they wanted to know is WHO KNEW ME in the squadron. When I said 'nobody', they said they were all full. I was a stan/eval and instructor qualifier on most of their gear and was coming from a 3 year tour in the AOR they were headed to next and all they cared about was the good old boy network. Having my roots in the VS community didn't help, either. Now that I have kids, I am no longer tempted to join the reserves...Do what's best for you and your family.

Chunk

Thanks Chunk. Apparently there is a Submarine Reserve group down in King's Bay that I may be able to join. Kinda weird since I have never been on a submarine for more than about 5 minutes. I guess they figure a nuke is a nuke is a nuke. I am going to wait a while and see what life is like in my new job and see if I am going to want to take the time for the reserves.

Captain in Air Force is a Lieutenant in Navy, both are O-3.

AF: 2nd LT
1st LT
Captain

Navy: Ensign
Lieutenant JG (Junior Grade)
Lieutenant

Shooter,

I recommend just contacting the unit right off the bat. That way you can get the real gouge. It is the unit that decides on your rank. It is alot different, you can just call up the DO or CO and stary from there.

Shooter,

Let me know what you find out...granted, you are a nuke and all, but I have been seriously debating it myself (reserves).

PS right behind you...132 'till terminal leave, and 173 'till civvie.

I've decided I am going to wait until things get a bit settled outside of the Navy before joinging the reserves. You can delay for two years with nothing bad happening.

88 till EAOS
56 till Sep leave!

Well it seems I spoke a bit soon as I will be standing duty Friday night this week. GO NAVY!!! Nothing like sticking it to someone on their way out the door.

I'll be right behind you...I'm sure my command is going to give me the shaft...they always do
banghead.gif
. I can't wait. To get out that is.
