Alaskan Aviation/Pilots

Hi,

I was just looking into the University of Alaska and was wondering is it really true what they say, great pilots come from Alaska? Also is the program really good as SOME people say?

Just like everywhere in the country there will be good pilots and bad pilots. Alaskan pilots get experience in different things pilots from other parts of the country wont.

The program here is good. However the flight department here isnt the best. The classes are small so the teachers get to know you and are willing to help you if needed.

Anything else you would like to know?
 
I think they say that because a pilot needs to be good to make it out of Alaska alive. The bad ones get killed. You can suck as a pilot in a lot of other places and get by.
 
Well yeah, pilots from Alaska are the best (stick and rudder) everyone knows that.:D The UAA flight department is a joke, I left 5 minutes after I walked in with my Private back in 2006 and have not looked back. UAA itself is a good school. PM me if you want to fly in AK, I can set you up with a few good local CFI's in Anchorage.

"The other one":yup: I imported my G/F from the lower 48. Foggles are required in AK to find a lady.
 
Flying in Alaska was by far one of the best experiences of my life. It gave some great experience, and saw first hand what bad decisions do.
 
So aside form UAA does anyone know of some quility affordable programs? I would love to find some little FBO in the middle of nowhere that only uses super cubs and Champs.

What are you wanting to do? Get your private? Private to Commercial? Zero to Hero or..?

Welllllll, for the most part no. Its too expensive to insure a cub or a champ to solo students so most of the training airplanes you'll be seeing will be of the 150/152/172 sort of genre. However, there are a few companies that offer that sort of thing. One of them is Land and Sea aviation at PAMR. Super great people, I mean really stand up individuals, as well as excellent ex-bush pilot and ex-airline pilot instructors. Another (where I got my private) is Arctic Flyers with Rick and Heidi Reuss (Rick's mother). Rick is probably the best instructor I've ever had, and conveys so much useful information its spooky. They've got T-Crafts on wheels and floats, 2 150s, and a 172 last I talked to them. You'll fly out of Z41 which is lake hood strip.

Even after I got my private finished (I would have done everything there, but unfortunately they can't take student loans, they're still super reasonable) I kept in touch with Rick, and would swing by and say hi. He's given me some excellent advice over the years too. The stuff they teach will keep you alive if you listen to them.
