How do you get a job as an airport manager/director? Do you need experience as a pilot? What type of degree would you need?

A friend of mine who did that was both a pilot and an engineer - not sure either were required, but both helped.

Most require a degree in aviation management or business administration. You'll need experience long before you're granted the position of "manager" of an airfield.

I held the Airport manager title for a year. PMDY, Henderson Field, Midway Atoll NWR.

I had a airport operations / aircraft rescue firefighting background. I certainly do miss the pay check.

Check out the American Association of Airport Executives, www.aaae.org , they have a lot of good information regarding airport management.

Cheers.

Oh haha. The airport manager at Ashland is also a A&P IA and he ows the flight school on the field. I always thought he had the best job ever. He just chills at the airport all day and get to work on airplanes when he feels like it. County pays him pretty well and he does ok with his rental airplanes.

Thanks for the link!

(I'm a double minor in my distance learning program at Riddle, Aviation Safety & Airport Management.)

Most manager positions at General Aviation or commercial airports require the candidate to have a B.S/B.A in Aviation Administration. Higher level executive positions require the person to be a certified AAE (American Airport Executive). You can learn more about this title at American Association of Airport Executives' website: www.aaae.org.
You also need a minimum of Private Pilot license for most positions so I suggest you look into that as well. I myself already have a degree in Mechanical Engineering and I am about to finish my second B.S in Aviation Administration and move of the operations ladder so if you have any questions feel free to send me a message.

There are internships for managing airports?

A lot of the larger airports have internship opportunities with airport authorities as well as design consulting firms.

Definitely get involved with AAAE and network at the various conferences!
