"Airplane Repo" on Discovery TV

I remember the original reason we got digital cable was so I could get Discovery Wings, which got replaced by the military channel a few weeks later  I love Flying Wild Alaska though, just this show was sort of iffy for me.

I used to religiously watch "Great Planes", later "Discovery Wings" (before it was a TV channel) when I was a kid. Still have around 40 VHS tapes stored at my folks' house with all the episodes that probably ever ran between the late 1980's and the mid 1990's when they stopped making them. I think I watched the XB-70, F-4 and F-14 episodes 1000 times in my childhood. I can literally recite the narrator's words, and know the music by heart. Recently I found some "Great Planes" episodes listed in the On Demand que. Started watching the XB-70 one, and had to turn it off after about 3 minutes.......same footage, but with new music, horrible commentary, and a pretty annoying narrator. Yes, I am a huge dork when it comes to airplanes. /rant

One of my fondest memories as a kid was watching those shows and building model planes with my father while we watched it.

I did the same, though it was drawing lego airplane designs and then building them. Maybe I will post my most recent of such creations. My folks spoiled me with Legos as a kid, and I still have about 4 crates full of them that I hope to one day give to my own kids. Best toy ever.

GAWD . . . ! I feel so OLD . . . !

Back when I was building models, the F100 was a state-of-the-art supersonic jet. Now the F100 is a twin turbofan, 100-passenger regional jet. And Discovery Wings? I was halfway through my career when that first aired.

If it makes you feel better, the F-100 is still one of the 5 airplanes of all time I would trade anything to fly. The weirdest thing was presumably flying some of the airplanes featured on the F/A-18 wings episode I watched as a kid. Flew a LOT of lot 5/6/7-ish jets while I was in the RAG. Wouldn't be at all surprised if some of those jets starred in that early showing.

Have you ever read the book Bury Us Upside Down? If not you should. Really good book.

Absolutely......great book. Read Palace Cobra shortly thereafter, and then re-read When Thunder Rolled. Probably the 3 best books about the Vietnam air war that are out there IMHO.

I will have to check those two out.
