Captain I was flying with was also a camera buff (and fellow Canon owner..he had a 40D) and let me try out his macro lens... night cockpit shot is out of focus but I liked the colors.

You know, just recently I took a very similar shot to the second one you've posted.

What was the lens used? I'd like to get a macro some time.

It was a Canon EF 50mm , f/2.5

I'm thinking about picking up the Tamron 18-270mm. I have an 18-55 and a 75-300 but this one seems more all inclusive for day to day stuff plus it has the image stabilization.

Where was it that you went that you were landing at night? Every trip that I did on the ER ended during daylight.

Wintertime in NY...sun sets early. Think this was about 5pm or so.

That explains it. Last winter I don't think I ever had a trip that got done after three pm. I always shot for the four pm flight back to ATL.
