WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Two teenagers were able to walk away from a rented airplane that one of them was piloting when it crashed onto a Kansas golf course, narrowly missing nearby homes.

A 17-year-old boy was flying the 1966 single-engine Mooney on Friday afternoon when it came down on the 14th hole at the Tallgrass Country Club, Wichita police said. An 18-year-old woman also was aboard.

If she came out of the plane behind him - was she in the left seat? Or maybe he told her to get in the back, which, if he did, is pretty level thinking for a 17yr old.
Hopefully he didn't simply run out of fuel and this was a bona fida engine failure. Either way he did a great job, plane can be replaced, that's what insurance is for, lives on the other hand...

I like the "wind chill" explanation of why carb heat at 50 degrees is legit. But don't worry, he knows what he is talking about because he has been a private pilot for 30 years.

My favorite part from that guy is you only have a few seconds to try to restart the engine before approaching stall speed. Guess they forgot what best glide speed is all about...
