Airnet requirements

First post, so go easy on me! :sarcasm:

I was looking at Airnet's hiring requirements and they are only 500TT and a multi-engine rating (some other requirements but that is the important part). I was thinking of applying and was wondering if any of you had worked there what you thought, and if I would be flying by myself or as SIC under the captain? Also, would this be in singles or twins? Would I be VFR only until I met IFR requirements, etc?

Like I said new to this forum so I may be asking a repeat question or a dumb question, the thing is that I don't know enough about freight flying to know if it is a dumb question which automatically makes me dumb. So say what you want, I will probably agree with you.

First off, those ARE NOT dumb questions! Go easy on yourself, brother!

I don't work at AirNet, but I can answer some of these:

- You can't be a PIC until you have Part 135 minimums, meaning 1200 TT and some other things. If hired, you will fly as an SIC until you meet the times.

- Most start in the Baron - so yup, multis. They also have Caravans, but to my understanding most don't start in them.

- To my knowledge, they don't utilize VFR captains, only IFR.

That being said, I was hired at Airnet and start training in July. I picked them for their safety record, maintenance, schedule, and benefits. Every single pilot I've talked to has positive things to say about them.

There are plenty of starcheckers here at JC - I'm sure they'll be around to answer your questions. Also, type "airnet" in the search function and you're bound to get a bunch of great info.

And welcome to JC!

With less than 1200 hours you would only be an SIC abd you would be in the baron for sure. After you get the 135 IFR PIC mins it's a tossup between the chieftan, baron, and caravan or a combination of the three depending on what run you get awarded.

Most likely not at 500, but if you want a job there, apply at 500 and update every month. I've seen as low as in the 800 hour range get the training date.

When I interviewed Craig told me to tell anyone I knew who had 500TT, comm SE and ME to apply.

Oh, okay. I sa won their site that they take resumes at 500, but I heard on the boards here they really wont take you till the applicant has around 1,100, I *think*. Probably just because it is cheaper to not have them sitting there and maybe over gorss....

They are bringing people in with considerably less than 1100 hours. I believe they are giving people class dates with as little as 800 hours. They will bring you in for an interview even sooner than that and place you in the hiring pool till you accumulate enough hours. If you have 500 hours apply, there is no reason to wait.

Even as an SIC there will be opportunities to reposition aircraft under part 91 as needed. That is about the only single pilot flying you will do as an SIC though. Aside from that you will fly under a PIC until you have 1200 hours and then you will be assigned a base/run. As of right now all of the SIC is done in the Barons. Depending on your PIC and the equipment in the particular airplane you will most likely fly every other leg as if you were the PIC. We do not do any VFR part 135 operations. Most of what we do is in the Midwest/Northeast and almost every day you will accumulate some IMC time. For better or worse, you will be assigned a seniority number the day you take your SIC checkride. It works out well for the people that come on board as an SIC, but slightly annoys people that have the PIC minimums and lose a bid they wanted.

Apply as soon as you hit the stated minimums and update monthly as the others have said. You will get called eventually. We are hurting for pilots right now and the chances of coming on as a lower time SIC are increasing. It used to be that you needed 1050 to come to class, but I think that has gone away in the past few months of crazy regional hiring.

Any other questions, just let us know!

When you say "apply" what exactly do you mean? When I met Craig about a year ago, he said to fill out the online application, but to click "save" instead of "submit" until you are ready to get hired (or something like that). I filled out the application a few months ago and have updated it a few times since then. Now that I have 500TT, do I submit it now?

Also, will they interview me now, then have me wait until I get 1100TT (or whatever) to start my training, or will they wait until I get 1100 before they interview me?

For some people it is just too complicated. If you have the minimums to apply, simply go to www.airnet.com, fill out the online application, and submit it. If you get a call, you did good. If not, continue updating and submitting.

Do some of the Barons/Chieftains have autopilots?

Almost all of the Barons and Chieftains have autopilots and some work better than others. The pitch servos seem to be the weakest link on most of the units. I believe all of the Chieftains have GPS, and the majority of Barons do or at least an RNAV unit of some type (RNAV, LORAN, etc..) I have flown at least one Baron that only had two VOR heads though for navigation, it will keep you sharp as a pilot though. From what I have seen, all of the Caravans have autopilots and GPS. Each type of airplane is fun to fly for its own reasons, and it will expose you to a lot of different avionics.

Yes, make sure you submit your application once you meet the minimums. The most important thing about the application is that you fill it out accurately. It is a scored application, so if you leave something blank or screw it up it will fall through the cracks. If you meet the minimum requirements and have filled out the application accurately they will call you for a phone interview and then schedule you for a face to face interview. How many hours you need to get that first call may depend on how many applicants there are currently, and how many pilots we need at the time. Also, once you have submitted your application it doesn't hurt to call the recruiting department to make them familiar with your name. From what I can tell, we are hurting badly for pilots so your chances of getting an early call are improved. Traditionally 1050 was the magic number to come to a class date. My guess is that it is quite a bit lower right now.

I was told specifically to not press the "submit" button by Craig Washka himself about a year and a half ago. Ever since then I have been updating my times every few months and clicking the "save" button instead. I remember him saying something about if you clicked the submit button, it'd get lost if you didn't meet their requirements or something. I can't remember exactly, it was a while ago. Thanks for representing your company by being a condescending jackass, though...

He's just bitter because he has to fly through thunderstorms without the guidance from his skipper.
After 500tt update every month by clicking submit.
Thats what I did and it worked out pretty well. Also give Craig a call.

Geez...this is why forums are so difficult. I really need to start using that "sarcasm" smile more often. Sorry butt. I didn't mean to sound like a jackass. Just trying to be funny.

Have you submitted your app yet? Like mike said if you have 500TT, go ahead and submit it. Good luck and hope to see you on the line.

Maybe I am a little bitter about the t-storms...or maybe b/c my boxers were soaked for 12 hrs. Shrinkage is a b*tch!
