Hey, anyone know when exactly do commercial jets turn off their landing lights fater take off and on before take off?
Ive seen some do it a few secs after the landing gear has gone up and others a few miles out from airport.

What about on approach, a few miles out, or on decent below a certain level?

Procedure varies from airline to airline and aircraft to aircraft. On the King Air they are turned on and off when the gear is raised/lowered because they're mounted on the nose gear ... so they're useless while the gear is up. In the Beechjet you have to observe a landing light maximum speed of 200 knots. When I went through DC-9 school it was standard practice not to leave them hanging out too long after takeoff because they did cause a slight buffet that could be annoying ... at least in the simulator.
 
Exactly as above. Alot depends on the type of lights installed...for example with aircraft with wing root lights we leave these on anytime operating below FL180. However, with the type of landing lights that extend when switched on like those on the Falcon we bring them in right after takeoff because they are limited to 220kts.
 
Our company policy is to turn of the landing lights out of 2500 agl when we're out of the terminal area and recog/logo lights off out of 10,000. Just the opposite on the way back in except we hold off on landing lights until gear is extended.
 
All lights other than landing lights on below FL180.
After T/O we turn the taxi and landing lights off because the taxi light is on the nose gear and the landing lights are in the same housing as the recognition lights (which stay on until FL180).
Landing lights come on when: (a)cleared for T/O and (b) cleared to land.

Nav, beacon, and strobes stay on above FL180.
