Aircraft Instruments

For those JC'ers who own their own aircraft, when it comes time to replace instruments do they have to be TSO'd? I heard that TSO'd instruments were required for commercial operations but not for Part 91. This confused me since I thought TSO=certified aircraft and non-TSO=experimental. Which is which?

You're absolutely correct.

That's why I love homebuilts. There are several PFD instruments that wokr great for half the money out there. Dynon has a PFD that slides into the attitude indicator slot. It has everything in a four inch screen, I've flown a RV with one and it was great.

Unless it's an OEM item, then it doesn't have to be TSO'd but the problem is with the average age of the GA fleet topping 30-years old finding OEM items is nigh impossible on some airframes thus any replacement items must be TSO'd.

The value of TSO can/could be argued but that's the way the rules are written.
